I used to frequent the Triple-M forum and the Maestro & Montego owners club forum (same username as here) when I had my much missed Maestro van. Seen plenty of pics of your lovely Maestro Turbo on there :)

Yeah i recognised the name, bit of a small world, i blame the internet (for many things).

Yep, still got the old girl, not driven for months though and enjoying it has taken a bit of a back seat whilst i start and maintain a family....bloody hard work, someone should have warned me!

Here's a recentish picture -

As of yesterday i am now an official Transit owner! Was doing some great mpg on the way back without trying despite the shorter diff, used less than quarter of a tank to get back from Tewksbury to Kent. Apart from the bit of throttle lag due to a duff pedal sensor, it drives great, brakes nice and reponsive, its quieter and more sure-footed but to be honest i'm not used to a van that has tread on its front tyres!

Its been a few weeks since i got the van and its been very eventful!

The first week was spent getting it kitted out for my SMART repair business, this takes ages to get it how you want so its all in place. Needs a couple more shelves but its been working quite well. Even has flooring tiles!

Main issue has been running and driveability issues. I have been fed with a load of bullshit from the seller who unfortunatly, doesnt realise he has been dealing with a bit of a motorhead who knows how to weild a spanner when needed..

The most pressing issue was the intermittant starting. The day after i got it, we were in the middle of this really cold spell and it took me 6 goes to get it started, i was not impressed.

I replaced the throttle pedal assembly thinking it was going to cure my hanging revs, it didnt and that was the first £78 quid down the drain, but one less thing to replace in future.

Next in line was the fuel filter housing. The filter minder wouldnt reset and it was found there was alot of air in the system, so it was replaced. This again, didnt make any difference but i got a good price on it anyway, another item thats favourite for faults.

I then went onto investigate further, and removed the fuel tank, fairly straightforward but it was pissing down with rain on a Friday night! When i took the sender and pick up out, it all looked ok. Then i put a light inside the tank and noticed something. It was a magnet, which was actually a split in half round item from a Ford MT75 gearbox!

Not impressed again, i spoke to the seller and explain my problems. He suggested starter motor for poor starting, but strange that, as the engine would turn over  He said it wasnt a magnet, it was a fuel saver device put in there from new as a trial. Oh really? I was born yesterday.

Oh, i asked him again for my invoice that i need for the tax man as he said his secetary would send it on to me via email as it was late on a Friday afternoon, fair enough as i had travelled 160 miles in -5 to pick the van up, and i trusted him... should not have done, as its still not here, giving me crap about it being sent to this email etc etc. Trading standards will be very interested in this one.

So, refit the tank minus magnet. Started on 2nd turn, filter minder would reset now. The magnet was causing a restriction in the feed, hence my poor performance and i thought, my poor starting.

Whilst mid-range torque improved, it still wasnt right, and it still wouldnt start first time every time, but it was overall better.

I was now starting to lose my patience as i knew my fuelling system was spot on now. I ended up having Martyn read my ECU for me and check the codes. One came up that was significant, p1608, which is a watchdog signal wire, or at worst, a dead IP.

As it happens, my van was equipped with a factory recon pump, something else i had not been told about, and hence the magnet in the tank to pick up swarf from the original, dead pump. It was all making sense now...

On Sunday i braved the cold and took the starter motor off to inspect the IP wiring/loom section. And there it was, a hole in the foil and a corroded green/white wire! One butt connector later and lots of insulating tape, it was all put back together and fired = first time! And it has done since.

So, starting issue solved, and its also pulling much better up to 4k. It gave a Renault Trafic DCi 115 a run for its money which surprised me, not as slow as i thought!

Its still a bit flat in 1st, but its great in every other gear, and i think its just calibrated like that to make it smoother as there are certainly no other issues with the running.

Told you it was eventful! Inbetween all this, i've managed to do over 2000 miles, and do some work!

It had a good claybar and wax polish not long ago, and i fitted mk7 trims to cover up the tatty steels, so it doesnt look too bad now.
