How to clean turbo?

Got clip of rather easy with that picture thanks very much, unfortunatey the vanes are moving freely, so looks like I'll just have to wait for guy to plug it in an try and diagnose, I cleaned map sensor other day as well also had a new maf sensor, so I think I've exausted my DIY options

There is a company in brentford that does replacement actuators. I don't know them, but Martynx or Belly do as they used them to fix his poorly 140. Not supposed to be DIY fix, but they just swapped it out and it worked without any problems afaik...

Could I replace it myself or is any specialist equipment needed? Got a trowl and a adjustable haha, I read a post where you said they need to be calibrated to each other? I've read a lot recently so might be mistaken

That is what Garrett say who make it, but as I understand Belly just changed the unit over and it all worked.

Easy job, 3 bolts, a plug, and that circlip. The VNT is sensitive to its position, but that isn't set by the bolts that hold the actuator on, so swapping the unit out could just be a simple swap.

That's if this is of course your problem, but they are known to fail.

Would a diagnostics pick up that the actuator is at fault over would it just say overboost and underboost and leave the to the spanner monkey to work out it's the actuator? Their £200 on ebay might be able to get a cheap secondhand one tho

If you put it on ids you can do a fault code test, you can do a turbo test also, it basically revs the engine up on it's own and checks if it is working, you also have live data which shows you all the sensor activity/boost pressures etc.

Is ids a dealer thing? The guy I was gunna take it to said he would plug it In and drive it to see might just try swapping actuator anyway I've kinda exhausted everything else well so i think

Just realised I've had it plugged into ids lad that did my remap had it he did a pump learn and PCM, I remember seeing VCM on the box his came up with underboost and overboost aswell

My 2008 2.4 l turbo transit chassis cab(factory made into a motor home) has had the ! warning light come on followed by the engine diagram light followed by severe lack of power. As I was travelling to a historic race meeting towing my racing car I was in a panic. I found by turning engine off then restarting the lights would go off. Called at a Ford dealer en route and found a lot of fault codes, as time was running out the tec
removed all the codes and we continued on our way. The ! light came on again and I found if I restarted the engine before the engine diagram light I could keep moving. To cut a long story short we returned home ok with only two engine restarts.(300km)
Took vehicle to my local Ford dealer and they found code P2563 Failure Type 72. They think the fault was caused by dirty contacts where the multi plugs go into the computer mounted on the left hand inner guard.
these were cleaned and some special grease used on refitting. I have also had the turbo actuator rod seized on a previous trip. This may be of interest to forum members.

Anyway, today used a bit of pipe to bypass intercooler and van went back to running perfect full power no smoke,, then after half a mile back to being a knob again, so I pulled up and looked at the inter cooling pipe work and noticed on the manifold inlet some oil, so removed the steel portion of the pipe to find a rubber o ring, the ring looked in good shape but thote I'd replace it anyway so went to ford as I'd guess it would be a dealer part, and guess what they want £350 for the I ring, well kinda because they would only sell the full manifold, anyone know where I can find one of these rings? It's kinda like a T if you cut across it

fIXED!!!! Well after all the messing of changing intercoolers tightening pipes finally sorted it,, I'd previously had the van in the garage for a new aux belt while it was there I asked mechanic to plug it in to see if there might have been any codes an he said yes there was the MAF sensor so I said yeh replace it because I had noticed a slight judder aswell, turns out this new sensor is a dud!! I read a post where one of the clever ones said to test MAF sensor unplug it so I did, van is now driving fine, sensor was a hella, never Thought to check this as it was new, just say thanks to the lads that have babysitted me through this

Here we are twelve years after your post, and more importantly, twelve years after the solution to your van's problem, and you've been able to help me out!

My van, a 2009 Mk7 2.4 diesel, was hesitating when accelerating under a light throttle but no problem under a heavy throttle. There weren't any warning lights and no codes so it was a case of trial and error to sort out the problem. The injectors and egr valve had recently been done, no splits in the turbo hoses, flushed the intercooler and no leaks there, had disconnected the turbo actuator and the lever for the turbo vanes moved easily, so I was thinking it was the actuator.

A quick trip to the local Ford mechanic, he took it for a drive and said the turbo actuator would need replacing. Not a cheap item and I'd already bought a second-hand one from the wreckers which hadn't made any difference, so I started digging around online for some clues. That's when I came upon this thread, and your solution... Straight out to the van, disconnected the MAF sensor, and went for a drive; the van had never run better! Drove the the local autoparts store for a new sensor, fitted it while in the carpark, and drove home with no issues and a big smile on my face.
