Install the operating system and at the beginning of installation you should get the option to format the hard drive (go for c:128gb) or the largest drive depending on how many partitions you have and whether it is xp.

Yes what i said lol, formatting a drive will basically fill it with 0's and mark it as writable iirc, either way for all intents and purposes you will have a clean wiped hdd.
Once you have formatted it and installed xp or 7 on it you'll need to reinstall any drivers and updates (if supported) or find an online update for xp to make it xp service pack 3 etc and install winzip/winrar and then install ids.
If you have an xp service pack 3 install disk you'll save a lot of time.

It's pretty simple when you see it, you put the operating disk in the cd rom that you are installing then turn laptop off then back on and it'll ask if you want to boot from cd press any key which you do, it'll see that there is already am operating system on the hard drive and then ask you what you want to do.
1. Install on a partition other than the 1 the operating system is on
2 format the partition etc. (Xp)
I think w7 will install the operating system but save the first operating system in a folder called windows old.

About half an hour lol
If you have xp base then you install it then xp2 them xp3 so 3 installs but still only maybe 1.5 2.5 hours.
If you have full xp3 disk then you install it once and done, the bonus is that if you go wrong with ids install and decide to reinstall xp then you would rather not have to spend hours doing it :?

But saying that, you don't want to pay 40 odd pounds for an xp disk
