I'm just in the process of putting my mk6 on the road to replace my trusty mk4, and to be honest I've dragged my heels since I've bought it as I don't trust the newer 1's as much as the old, I've fixed my mk4 many times on the side of the road with the basic toolbox I carry, something I dought I'll do with the new truck, but finger's crossed my doughts will be proved wrong I hope, watch this space, should be back from the bodyshop next week, and on road by next month hopefully

yep, there is something about the Mk 4&5 that justifies the original post. Usually scruffy and bruised, distinctive in their sound, refuse to be hurried and kind of endearing to drive.

without taking into account that the mk6mk7 COMFORT and perfOrmance levels against the Mk4MK5.
the truth is the older mk4mk5 break down more regular than the Mk6/MK7 but the fact that they can be fixed by almost anyone and easily, it doesn't seem as bad as the MK6Mk7 that are infact more reliable, but if they do have slight problems, alot of people can't and dont know how to fix them making it more of a ball ache, making mountains out of mole hills.
theres a lot of Mk6Mk7s that end up with a shopping list of parts fitted cos of bad diagnosis  or gearboxs fitted for the fAULT OF A Gear linkage, glowplugs fitted ending in heads been removed when they have stating problems because of something else  heade gaskets replaced when theres an EGR cooler leaking or oilcooler failed    etc etc....and the greatly miss understood TDCI MK6's for having everything replaced on them cos of a faulty injector,

That makes a lot of sense when said like that, and I suppose with experience mk6's will become just as easy to work on for regular hands on user's who do repairs and maintenance themselves.
I just love the simplicity of the mk4/5's and reliability is not sarificed for it, there are just a few niggles about the new breed what bother me, I'll have to get used to them though eh

I do love my Mk6 DRW Jumbo, but have taken another 3yr warranty out on it, with 2 1/2 years to run because of all the techincal stuff & all running gear is covered, (Exept frictional material, bulbs, wipers etc) Its fast comfy & pulls like a train. but how I also love my Mk5 & mk3 too, They are OLD SCHOOL, SO reliable, easy to fix, spares are reasonble, Engine's are BOMBPROOF. J.L.
35 years of driving, repairing, sleeping in transit's lovin every minute.

I Work on transits mk6 and mk7 6 days a week every week . but drive a 2000 mercedes sprinter 311cdi (chipped ) service van which never misses a beat or has silly bloody lights on the dash that come on all the time. never goes wrong and will blow any transit away on the hills or towing. and its loaded up to the guns in the back .150000miles covered and going strong.

The ideal mexico is the Di of the boiler world, only when they start droppin water do you have to replace them, but like the Di they are rather inefficient, not very fast at heating up, and weigh a bloody ton :)
