yes thru injector holes tester should have instructions, it will run as good as new im sure when you have finished, you will get a slight variation on compression between each cylinder, what the variation allowance is i cant remember on your engine, or what compression you should have ,sure winterheating ,or one of the techs will advise

Finally got the head off today! all fairly straightforward :) and upon closer inspection in the daylight with the cams and carrier off it was as suggested by AK
AK wrote:My 54 plate tddi 115ps one managed to snap a valve spring and it sounded just like you have explained, could be wroth checking the valve springs

one of the inlet valve springs had snapped causing the valve to drop :(

Image

Hmm that spring looks funny!

Image

that will be why then :x

Image

Dropped valve!

Image

marked piston! doesn't appear to have any damage though!

Image

Valve in question! appears straight and didn't stick at all

Image

thank god it's a lwb
and i've had an idea

Image

only joking

so what do you guys reckon?
1 should i replace all the valve springs?
2 should i replace the valve?
3 i'm also thinking of doing the valve stem seals also whilst it's off, is there anything else i should do whilst the heads off?
4 are the headbolts stretchbolts?
all advice and pointers welcomed cheers guys :D

the engine sitting for so long may have had something to do with spring breaking, why dont you just price up a full set of valve springs and valvestem oil seals. :?:

whats the mark on the other inlet spring :?:

i think you should be able to get 1 valve for about £20 for the sake of it, it will, and has by the looks of it been spinning round hitting piston so may have made the edges weaker still.

Thats what i thought tbh maybe the springs had gone brittle weak etc etc! that mark is a mixture of oil/bad light/i phone camera! i saw exactly the same thing and thought wtf is that! checked it and cleaned it off all and it's ok :) cheers winterheating 8) think i'm just going to do the lot i've always tried to do things like that as its a false economy not to

yeah just to double check its not bent slightly, otherwise it would only make piston pickup and wreck the block. :(

I'd pretty much garentee the piston protrosion will be fine with that minor amount of marking to the piston ( seen pistons with much worse damage when the timing has jumped and they have been fine ) :!:

Probably worth changing all the springs, depending on price of course :)

Replace all 10 x 17mm and 8 x 13mm head bolts, 10 rocker shaft bolts and put the same notch head gasket on as you've taken off
