Cold starting of direct injected diesel engines.

Just an observation with my own 2.4 tddi which I have been working on, I removed the inlet manifold and egr, while egr wasn't bad gave it a clean anyway then looked at the inlet ohh no1 inlet port virtually blocked with soot no 2 not much better 3 and 4 not too bad cleaned it all up starts a lot better. Prior to this sometimes would take a few cranks to get going other times would start straight away obviously worse in the winter.

It'll be listed as cold start to minus 20 degrees c, in uk we see about 0 at best so you could possibly get away with it, but ppl have suggested that the flow plugs also help emissions and possibly save fuel etc.

My experience was that they were present on my van so I wanted them working, I fitted some nice new Beru 11v ones as per original and with all the updates etc I did on my van, it started on the button every time.

It's amazing how many ppl have brought them to me saying that they're mint etc and I've turned the key and it has taken a few lumpy seconds to get the thing going followed by numerous strange noises then what sounds like a tank.

It's mint innit m8.





Ps. They're relatively cheap but get the engine hot as ppl have snapped them trying to remove them, I've never done it but then my vans last owner was a vicar

I know I have some sort of glowplug fault, but as it was starting perfectly in the summer I was not worried.. It seemed a little more hesitant in early september but has been fine on these even colder mornings..

I presume the controller has died but expect it's probably been burnt out by failing plugs. I guess if it makes it through winter, there's nothing lost if I snap a plug when trying to do them in the spring..... I did my old BMW E61 530d whith the same horror stories but the dead plugs came out pefect ( hot engine, blow lamp and Shock Unlock).....

I think when these plugs snap they leave a hole into the chamber so it'll need seeing through in that case and repairing.
07 should just be a relay R2 and fuse f15 that powers them.

I,m in Wales and last nite 1st frost, maybe -2. Hard to start this am. Normally starts instantly, This am, cranked 5 sec, fired and stalled. T hen stared, idled poorly, would not rev up, no power to back up, lots of smoke. No engine lights. After 15 min of coaxing, it regained full power and runs normally. I chg,d the fuel and air filters 4k miles ago. 56k miles on an ,03. Does a blown glow plug fuse show any warning?

my 2.4 tdci starts , then after 10 seconds cuts out , , restarts instantly , then after restart it 10 seconds later cuts out , keeps doing this till its warm , if you drive it it revs ok but if revs drop it goes into tickover and wont rev or , or just cuts out ,

I appreciate this thread is quite old but hopefully someone will have an idea. Putting my hands up and admitting not to being too mechanically minded on engines, especially Diesels.

I've got a 2005 Transit 2.0 Duratorq with 110k miles on the clock. I'm not talking about cold weather starting but just when the engine is at ambient temp like being left overnight.

It can take a minute or more on the starter in 10s bursts to start all the time spewing black smoke out the exhaust which I think is unburnt Diesel.

When it does start the smoke stops and it runs beautifully. Turn it off and it restarts instantly even after a break of an hour or two but it's just the initial start.

I've found a bit of a cheat where |I turn the ignition on but don't engage starter for 5 seconds and repeat 5 times but this isn't ideal.

Any ideas?
