I got the rust-bucket indoors late afternoon, ready for changing the driver's side CV joint tomorrow. While I was there, I got a ladder and looked on the MH roof. I almost wish I hadn't. Front and back seams both extensively rusted, with several holes. Looks like a big derust and fibreglassing job coming up. :( On the bright side, I also removed the lower left door catch and freed it up with lots of duck oil and screwdriver wiggling. Now back on and working well. :D

I set about changing the knackered driver's side CV joint this morning. It turned out to be a pig of a job. I didn't have a ball-joint splitter, so I had a hell of a job to get the bottom ball joint out. Finally, after masses of smacking, it gave in. Getting the CV jont to come off the drive shaft was even worse. I assumed that like other CVs I've done, it would pop off with a few sharp smacks from behind. OH no! This one was having none of it whatsoever. I ended up hitting it so hard, and so many times, that the balls flew out and the outer joint came away. I then ended up slicing through the remaining part of the inner race (pictured) in two places with a slitting disc in the angle grinder. I took care not to cut through to the splines on the shaft, then chopped through the last tiny bit with hammer and old screwdriver. Putting the new CV kit in was straightforward and I made sure I greased all splines before putting back together. ook it for a spin round the block and deep joy, no more clacking on corners. :D :D :D

I didn't want to pull out the driveshaft and have gearbox oil all over the place. In hindsight, it might have been quicker and less hassle to remove the shaft and put it in the vice. At least you can get a decent swing at it with the hammer.

That's what I was thinking but same as yourself don't want to spill gearbox oil all over the driveway, its the passenger side on mine.

Oh nice. Can't beat a bit of rolling around on the ground outdoors, up to your eyes in grease, mud and rust. Just needs to be a gravel drive to really put the icing on the cake. :D

Precisely why I don't do it

Customers don't realise that.
A. You don't get the parts for cost.
B.you don't have all the fancy tools because you can't afford them plus vat etc.
C. You have no ramps etc so end up rolling about on the floor in the elements potentially risking your health from the elements and or stability of the vehicle perched on a rusty Halfords axle stand that is missing its hardened steel pin and has an aluminium tube in () not mine :?

And then it's, can you do it cheaper than the garage mate you don't have their overheads

Ooh please can I lie in the floor for 2 hours covered in shite for 15 pounds :P

Aye it's mighty fun lay on your back fannying around under the van  luckily it's a tarmac drive but I have had to cut some out and relay it due to oil spills, er indoors goes mad at me over the mess

Yes 65 until I look at it and think of a reason why it's 100 now, maybe needs a long stand or some tartan paint which is very expensive you know

The long stand it what cost more, you may even need a left handed hammer with it being on the left, so that's now 150 + vat, oh and now it need disc pads and berings  sounds like quick fit

Took the tango van in to get the rear disks done cause I needed it on the road quick

Plus couldn't face doing the 400 N nut thingy again, had to put an 8 foot scaffold tube on the bar to undo it last time

Coming up your way on Friday N, do you still want me to pick that wing up from Al :?:
