How to clean turbo?

Postby Chris205 » Fri Apr 04, 2014 10:04 pm

Been having some issues with with over and underboosting, before I go throwing money at it just wondering how you would go about cleaning the turbo of a mk7 140 rwd, would something like a fortes cleaner do the job?

Terracleans are supposed to. Not 100%, there are mixed reviews about this service.

Best way would be to take off and clean it.

Get new studs/nuts/bolts etc from ford, their not too expensive and make putting everything back together easy.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

I really don't know if they will come off whiteout grinding or something extreme van before I bought it looks like it was sat for a good while, it's a 2010 but engine looks like it's come off titanic, I've never attempted to take a turbo off anything let alone one so rusty, is there anything I should be careful of whilst doing it?

Doubt if cleaning the turbo will do much, if something is seized, and then cleaning won't do anything. I rebuilt my turbo, all the nuts came off the manifold easy apart from getting to them. Is it a black box actuator turbo, if so these do fail and give varying boost problems.

I think it's a map issue.
You can undo the bar that joins the actuator to vnt via a circlip, then you can see if the vnt moves freely, don't force the actuator tho as it is a geared servo

Limited my best guess from everything I've read is that the vanes mite be stuck open? And mines a 140 with an electronic actuator

So is that more likely to have gone than the turbo vanes seized?

You could just watch the actuator and get someone to floor the gas pedal a few times.

What should it look like if it's working correctly?

It should move lol, look at the black box (actuator) and feel the rod behind it, that will move roughly a cm on hard acceleration(full movement).
If it grinds etc and no movement then it's is probably at fault.
If you get the van on ids you can read live data and do a turbo test also.

I never measured tbh but you can undo the metal linking rod and move the arm on the turbo vnt, it'll move up and down with stop at either end, you could have a faulty vnt inside the turbo but how can you have over boost and under boost at the same time?
I think you would be best getting it on ids
