earth connections

Postby benbird » Wed Apr 04, 2007 6:45 pm

Hi.

i have been having a slight starting problem for a while now. it does start every time, but the starting process does seen a bit sluggish, almost like the battery if nearly flat, but i have had it checked and apparently its fine. There is quite a lot of vibration while starting.

i have been reading topics on this site, and cleaning the earth connections seems to come up quite a lot. can someone please tell me where these connections are please as i have no idea?

also, is it really obvious when the timing is out by one tooth as i have been told that can sometimes happen if an unexperienced garage gets there hands on them.

Many thanks for any help.

Ben

Withoout saying which van you have it's difficult, but basically there should be a thick wire from the battery -ve to an earth bolt on the body, and/or a thick wire from the -ve to the engine block. It never hurts to loosen these off, clean the sh*t out and retighten.
Whatever current is being drawn by the starter motor positive must be also going through the earth connections.
Also check your battery terminals, and give them a quick wipe with a wire brush, or some emery cloth to get rid of the clag. Reconnect wires and give them a smear of vaseline.
