Damaged engine

Postby Jon Maine » Sat Apr 07, 2007 7:24 pm

I am looking to buy an accident damaged vehicle, it has a 2004 duratorq engine which runs fine despite taking a bit of the impact to the front end of the engine.
Upon close inspection there is an aluminum section which is just over 2 inches in depth which has the sump attached underneath and the top is attached to the underside of the engine block. This is damaged cracked in 3 places.

Could anyone advise me if this is a component which is easily changed ?

Is this a FWD 2.0L or a RWD 2.4L :?:

The ally part you are talking about, may be the intercooler

7 it is, although I didnt look at it from that angle!!

Could the stiffening plate also retain the crank in place? it seems a bit low for that to me but never having had one apart I wouldnt know.

Yes, thats what I thought the situation could be, thats the second person who told me that they think its line bored.

I guess thats to much of a coincedence not to be true.

theres a gasket between the ladder frame and the block . have changed a few gaskets due to oil leaks . you have to take the gearbox out to change it. you dont get one with a new block so i would say you can buy it seperatly

So I am a bit in the dark still, is this ladder frame machined to match the engine block? or is it a question of unbolting it after removing the gearbox and fitting a new one?

from what Geoff says it's line bored to the crankshaft journal size so it will need machining to match the crank

it doesnt hold the crankshaft it just goes between the block and the sump with the oil pump bolted to it.the crank is part of the block .you have to take timing & oil pump chains off gearbox and sump to change the ladder frame

so an easy(ish) swap

when Geoff said it needed line boring I assumed it was a ladder rail for the crankshaft main bearings
