Noise when braking!!

Postby handyandy733 » Sun May 06, 2007 7:43 pm

I have a great T280 hi-roof 2002 transit that I am extremely pleased with, this is my 4th transit. I recently noticed a noise like a low drone when I brake and come to a stop, I immediately thought it was pad wear and renewed these and the disc's and thought all was well. Now about 2k on, the noise is coming back, surely the pad's can't be the problem again. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Were the pads worn when you replaced them last time?

Have you checked them since it started again?

would you describe it as a low graunch noise when braking with moderate force to a stop from say 20mph?

If so, it's probably a normal noise resulting from the metal content in the friction materials used to make the pads.

Nothings been the same since we lost asbestos :D

Noise when braking!!

The pads were a bit shot when they were changed, well so i'm told. I got 12 months warranty on the van so I took it to the dealer. 1st time they said it was due to excessive build up of dirt, 2nd time I took it they replaced pads and disc's, even though these were replaced 8 months previously when I bought the van, and now I think i'll give them a bit of a kick up the hole, because every time I take it I loose a days pay (I'm self-employed).

The noise you describe does sound like wheel bearings to me, a common failure on mk6s. If it's one side that's going, it will show more when steering in the opposite direction (ie, steering to the left, noise comes from o/s hub). The o/s bearing is shot on mine and although it is noisy all the time, it is worse whilst braking due to the load on the hub.

Noise when braking!!

Postby handyandy733 » Mon May 07, 2007 2:24 pm

Thanks for all your help guys, very much appreciated. I'm not going to touch the van myself until the warranty is out, then the dealer can go swivel for my business! I hate taking any vehicle to a garage, rarther have a go myself, at least then you learn a bit! I just wanted to see what people thought it could be so I have a little more ammunition to give the dealer. Thanks again for all your help. Safe drivin'

just got mine back from fords, they changed the disks and pads earlier this year and now is vibrating and making noise under braking they said the pad was not on square and was hitting the carrier? Does seem better now though.
