altering gear ratio on mk6 fwd for higher gearing-any pitfal

Postby nitroman » Tue May 08, 2007 9:13 pm

got the 220 bhp as you know, been talking to a nice chap who says he can alter the final ratio/gear so that all the gears are taller? my object is to achieve a more useable gearbox with all this power and to once and for all show any sphincter van or simalar just wots what.looking for 130mph, so if all ratios are increased by the same rate can any one see any potential problems with whats planned?
ps tryes are v rated etc and suspensions just been stiffened and lowered.

The only probl as such I can see is you will be sacrificing a little acceleration, but with 220bhp even that shouldnt be a problem.

Your speedo will need recalibrating  :(

:? i am not shure what ratio diff you have , but i thourt the lowest they do was 4.23 :?: some 125ps had 4.53 i think not shure but i went for the 4.23 this gives me good all round performance but the 4.53 was the towing diff fords said anyway!
but top speed is still 110mph(on the gps) at 4k but it wont go faster than that! :?

Who's "they" :?:

Any decent engineering firm will know what would fit surely :!: ( maybe something from a Mondeo :?:)

And top speed will be the same if the ratios are the same mark :!: It's just that nitroman's will get there alot quicker :D

And when the new diff is fitted, top speed will be alot higher

nitroman, what mad speed do you want your VAN to go :?:

hi andy, apparantly the mondeo box is completely different and is in no way interchangable( ford engineers) the only hope was to custom make the final drive to do this....as for top speed well im hoping for 130+ mph the power is there, the vans 200 kg lighter and its lowered so it should sail through the air better? could this be the worlds fastest deisel van???
