chain rattle on start up

Postby Sparkylc4 » Sat May 23, 2015 9:27 pm

Hi Peeps

I recently acquired a mk6 2.0l 100 280s transit quite cheap, it has done 132000 miles.
As the chain rattled on start up and then went quiet after a while I decided to have a complete new cam chain kit fitted, and all new belts etc.
Since having the van back its started to have the same symptoms again, now I popped down to the garage whilst the initial job was being done so new the engine was apart. I recently asked the garage about the rattle and said it might be oil sludge in the oil pump and not getting oil to pressure instantly giving the rattle for a few seconds.
Would this sound correct or do you think it's just to get more £s from me. I have no history with the van so cannot say how regular it was serviced.

Thanks in advance for any advice, thoughts or pointers
Mark

Sounds like the hydraulic tensioner failing.
If you are worried about sludge build up before the pump, drop the sump off and wash it and the pick up pipe out in some degreaser/paraffin/petrol.

Yes it's possible, try a few oil changes in quick succession.

I take it a new tensioner was fitted with new chain?

Thanks for the repays, I had a complete kit new chain tensioner, guides the lot. I was just concerned whether they were just trying to pull a fast 1 and get more work from me.
Reading other posts could anything be failing on the pump side or has this nothing to do with the chain rattle, I've also noticed I need to throttle the pedal on start up or its like it fires on 2/3 cylinders.
Would the timing cause any of these issues etc etc.

Sorry but I'm haven't a clue regarding engines etc but I'm going to have to learn quickly
Thanks Mark

Timing being out due to slack tensioner would make starting more difficult
