Losing power steering fluid

Postby enCrypt » Tue May 26, 2015 10:25 pm

I'm losing quite a bit of power steering fluid on a Mk6 2002 90 T350.
The steering has been intermittently notchy with a binding feeling, even groaning at times, then it can be fine.
It still feels the same but I've noticed quite a lot of fluid under the van and the cross member under the steering rack is wet.
Will this be the steering rack that is leaking somewhere or maybe the steering pump?

Thanks,
Mark...

Can you find exactly where it is leaking from? Is there any coming from the bell housing?(external slave cylinder on these but it may be possible to leak from the end) Could be something on the steering rack/pipes, i replaced a pipe that had a pin hole where it was clamped to the chassis iirc.
Could come from the pump behind pulley out from the pas pipe union.
You'll just have to find the leak :-(
If you fill the fluid up to max and then go lock to lock a couple of times, is the whining gone then til the fluid drops?

Thanks for you response.
I'm afraid I don't know much about cars / vans so dont know what a bell housing is etc.
The steering wheel doesnt make a whine, its more of a deep groan and moving it from lock to lock doesn't help.
As I said its very intermittent and feels fine sometimes.
I've put some Wynns steering stop leak stuff in it last week but havent had a chance to look underneath again (plus the weather has been terrible here!)

Thanks
