Battery Warning light with engine screechy/grinding

Postby kayakremix69 » Sat Jun 27, 2015 12:44 am

Hello,
I need some advice from all of you knowledgable transit owners.
My 2003 2.4L T330 RWD SWB Transit displays the battery warning light on most start ups.
The warning light both flashes slowly and stays on constantly.

This is also along with a screechy, grinding 'collapsed bearing like' sound coming from the engine bay.
The sound increases in pitch and speed inline with the rpm of the vehicle.
The noise is more prosoma any a lower speeds.

Both the battery warning light and noise are present at the same time.
Both seem to disappear suddenly after an extremely quick glitch in power and a squelchy screech noise.
After this normal van running commences with no warning light or noise.

The light and noise was originally only on startup and the first 1minute of driving.
Now the light is almost constant either flashing or static and the noise comes in and out more frequently. Usually noticed most when cruising down the gears and deducting speed.

No loss of acceleration
Ticking over fine
Starting fine
No overall lag in power or juddering
Alternator working fine when tested at garage however van may have been tested when warning light not present and sound not apparent (it happens intermittently)

Thanks for bearing with the long winded explanation
Tom

I would remove the belt when the engine is cold, and check all the bearings where the belt runs, it could even be the alternator bearings going :?: :?: :?:

Thanks for your advice.

Forgive my lack of knowledge:

Does the Main Auxiliary drive belt need to be removed in a particular position or technique to ensure proper timing of the components it is running? Or is it OK just to remove the top housing and roll it of the pulleys after pulling back the tensioner pulley? starting from the bottom to the top when re-installing.

Thanks, Tom

Theres no issues with timing, just make a note of the routing its on before you take it off!

Even with the tensioner pulled down it can be a bit of a struggle to get it bac on!
