mk 6 2.4 tddi non runner

Postby jamiehinds » Tue Jul 07, 2015 10:50 pm

hi i have a 2000 transit t350 LWB Hi top 2.4 RWD with the 90hp TDDI engine 190k on th clock. im having issues with it.

i bought the van in march as a non runner from a friend. He was driving along then cut out and rolled to a halt and wouldn't restart.
he had it recovered to his house. found a wire chafed at the front of the fuse box ( the wire from the front of the fuse box to the positive terminal under the bonnet at the front) so repaired that but no joy. called out a mobile mechanic who plugged it in, got P1664 pump control module. I then bought the van to have a go at fixing it... so far iv had no luck at all after speaking to a few people I was told it was almost certainly the fuel pump or maybe the timing jumped a tooth. so I purchased a pump from a running van. I took the whole timing cover off and double checked the timing and it was perfect. so continued and fitted the replacement pump.
after fitting I had someone out to code the new fuel pump in after a few attempts he told me that there was another issue. He was getting two codes a P1664 pump control module(I presume this is the code from the previous pump) and P1608 internal ECM malfunction. he had a snap-on Solus. He said he has done plenty over the years. He said there could be damage to the wiring loom somewhere causing the issues. So I have pulled the wiring loom off and checked it for breaks and it all looks perfect. I have noticed that the fuel pump relay is not working (no signal to the relay to operate it, there is 12v coming into the relay on the switch side.) so as far as i can tell no power is getting to the pump.
when I fitted the fuel pump I was under the impression that the LED on the clock should have been flashing but it wasn't.
also the central locking no longer works (both fuses under the steering wheel are fine) if you mash the buttons you can hear a clicking but only the side cargo door seems to work, it will lock but when you try to unlock it, it unlocks for a moment then just relocks to you have to be fast with the handle to get it to open. the rear doors seem completely dead cant get them to do anything. there stuck closed.
not sure if these stopped working at the same time but i thought i would try give as much info as possible.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Central locking is a different issue, I'll come to that later, however regarding the pump, it's quite possible the replacement is knackered, as even new refurb ones fail on test quite fequently. However, the code you say was originally there when van cut out, dosent seem quite right, there should have been others if it was a running van that stalled. What did / does the led do? Both with the key out, and then when you turn the key on?

I would check wiring 1st. Faulty wiring to pump is a common problem.

A failed fuel pump (EDC), following DTC's are normally stored.

P1564 Injection Pump Control Module Requesting Reduced Fueling
P1664 Injection Pump Control Module Malfunction

Engine running, but has diesel knock & following DTC's below are stored

P0149 Fuel Timing Error
P1564 Injection Pump Control Module Requesting Reduced Fueling

- Faulty fuel timing solenoid located on back of the fuel pump

was the pump from the same power output as your engine as 2 different pumps were fitted to transits and they are not compatible

I had an issue with a second hand pump the solus wouldnt touch it even though iv done loads it kept throwing up a fault can't remember what it was though in the end I had to use ids I would check all the above mentioned posts first as Iv had those problems as well but might be worth considering different means of programming though
just follow the onscreen instructions and it's fairly idiot proof...trouble is, we keep producing better idiots

Coming back to the wire you repaired, it sounds like the glow plugs fuseable link wire, it melts when a glow plug shorts out, usually repairing it and not sorting the glowplugs should result in it shorting again.
You might need to clarify which wire you repaired.

For central locking there's 2 fuses taped to the steering column that are worth checking.

If i was checking and found the fip relay dead I'd manually power it and see if the van starts, however, i don't know if it is not working due to a pcm failsafe tbh so gather more info before trying i think :o

The FIP relay is grounded by the PCM, but only after the EDC shakes hands with the PCM and the immobiliser is happy, (it all takes a few milliseconds of turning the key usually, so you don't see a delay at all) The relay provides the high power feed to operate the timing and metering solenoids, which is why I was asking what the pats light was doing.
