Help! Problems with Transit Tourneo Minibus 2002

I have a Transit Tourneo Durotorque 2L Diesil Minibus 2002 and am having problems starting it when taken on long runs and sometimes around town.

Occasionally, it won't start 1st time, 2nd or 3rd attempt will start but will either run smoothly and is spot on, or runs very rough with no acceleration and cuts out, then will start on the next attempt spot on and drives normal with loads of power. No warning lights come on, so dealer tells me can't do diagnosic check so its a case of elimination and could be expensive. Just had full Ford Service and fuel filter replaced twice. Has anyone come across this before I would be grateful for any advice?
