you need special tools to get inside the alternator, if it's noisy your better off replacing it before it gets worse.

What sort of fitting is it? Big nut and the shaft has an allen socket in it, or is it the sort with Woodruff key

hi sidspop, none of the above i think? the top of the alty shaft has splines on the inside, the same goes for the top of the pully, as if u need an inside out ring spanner with an inside out socket to go through the middle..
if that makes sense??

there is a splined tool that locks the overrun clutch, a dealer will have it.

A genuine alternator comes with the pulley fitted.

most factors sell the tools for these now but every alty I've bought (even pattern) has had the pulley already on it - (looks like I bought the tool set for nothing then :( ) :D

bout time i updated this! i got the pulley off in a vice, i found i had a splined tool to hold the shaft!
put it all back on the van.. lasted a day!!!!!!!!
turns out i didnt have the pulley very tight on the new one, so belt came to pieces, and worn away part of the alty shaft and pulley!
however, i didnt give up there!
with the help of a few massive washers and lining the pully back up by eye and reusing my original worn belt i saved for emergencies we back up an running smooth!!
the old alty since its been off the van is now impossible to turn by hand!! was a good move to change it i reckon! (cheers nighthawk) just had to justify spending money on what i considered an annoying noise!!
