Fuel Consumption on a Petrol Transit.

I am looking at buying a mint transit 02 plate with 30,000 genuine miles one owner. The only thing stopping me buying it is that it has a 2.2 petrol engine. Has any forum members got an idea of fuel consumption?
Would you avoid a petrol van. I will be doing average mileage a year.

depends what you are doing with it and how heavy you are with your right foot, and also what gearbox and axle its running.

my 1993 2.0efi has very short 1,2, & 3 gears, and 4th and 5th are very long. consequently it gives 16-17mpg around town as its always between 2-5k in 1st to 3rd.

on the motorway its a different story. 80mph is about 2.5k, 110 is about 3.8k - even ragging it like that all day long it will give about 25mpg, sitting at 70 its barely past a fast idle in 5th and will give nearer 30.

210 from a tank in a bad week, 350+ on a good one.

more modern petrols should be better still.

take it for a test drive and see what revs its doing in all the gears and at what speed, if you do a lot of motorway miles and dont want a slug, maybe the petrol is for you, if economy is what you want and you dont care how quick it is, then a diesel might suit you better.

a petrol is never going to be as frugal as a stinker, but its got more guts and legs.

Yes its the 2295 Petrol 145 BHP 147 IB/FT. Good BHP but lower torque than the 85 BHP turbo diesel. Can these be converted to LPG?
If so is a DIY kit available?

Below is Cut + Pasted from another post of mine, but essentially most i think most Petrol engined Mk6's are actually Dual-Fuel, so conversions are possible - would think £1500-£2000 ball park costs.
Think it's fair to say my MPG is shot, and prob needs a service..!

<Well thanks for all the (varied) replies, and after my jog to Cheshire, the results are in as follows..:

LPG - Normal Driving in London:
A Full tank of 53 Litres does 150 miles, working at out 12.8 MPG or 17.2p per mile

LPG - Motorway Driving (London to Cheshire, clear run, avg 80mph)
A full tank of 53 litres does 190 miles, working out at 16.3 MPG or 13.6p per mile.

Petrol - Motorway Driving (Cheshire to London, clear run, avg 80mph, but a fair bit more when hounding a cheeky Vito.. !)
Indicated half tank used (actually 41.8 Litres and refilled when back near home) does 190 miles, working out at 20.6 MPG or 20.0p per mile..

So, ignoring the shoddy MPG for a second, LPG is cheaper for me by broadly a third..

I'm guessing a diesel would knock these figures into a cocked hat..?>
