Hi Paul, just to clarify as I'm getting on a bit but it is saying that if a vehicle was a class 7(I presume anyway) but got changed to m1 living van (day van/camper) but doesn't show it on the logbook or chassis plate then where it was mot'd as an m1 class 4, it can no longer be class 4 if there is no evidence that it qualified as class 4 m1.
If someone converted it to m1 class 4 then they would have proof wouldn't they? And if they don't then how would or could they have got it mot'd as class 4 anyway?

Correct. A class 7 vehicle that's been converted to a living van (day van/camper) but has vehicle catagory N1 on V5c. - It will still be tested as class 7.

Prior to May 20th. it was down to the vehicle presenter to confirm if vehicle has the capacity to carry goods. If presenter said no to goods. Tester could have easily tested vehicle as a motor home. (class 4).
Quite a few living vans have been successfully registered as catagory M1 on V5c - They will still be tested as class 4.

With the the latest amendment. For a living van to be tested as class 4. It has to be confirmed that vehicles type approval is M1.
Easily done by presenter providing V5c as proof.

It also gives a clear definition between a living van & Motor caravan.

A living van is a vehicle used for
living accommodation by one or more persons and which is also used for the carriage
of goods or burden which are not needed by such one or more persons for the
purpose of their residence in the vehicle. Living vans are classed as goods vehicles & subjected to speed limits set for goods vehicles.

A motor caravan is a motor vehicle which is constructed or
adapted for the carriage of passengers and their effects and which contains, as
permanently installed equipment, the facilities which are reasonably necessary for
enabling the vehicle to provide mobile living accommodation.
Motor caravans are not classed as goods vehicles & subjected to same speed limits set for cars providing unladen weight is no more than 3.05 tonnes maximum

Just dumping old junk smokers in Africa is not that easy

Not quite, where I am they test for emissions on ALL commercial vehicles yearly, they will randomly select private vehicles for a roadside check and if it fails we just slip a couple of notes as a goodwill gesture to look after his barefooted kids, not I have ever done so as the occasion never arosem was once tested for smoke on the side and the tester couldn't believe my van didn't smoke as this is possibly thee only MK6 in South Africa...long story why and how, another day........

Having a gander through the new rules and being subject to them a couple of times for the latest test it isn't that much different. just a few new checks. it seems that the dodgy garage quick quid is brake fluid contamination... £60 quid labor plus fluid... seemed pretty pissed when I said no I can do that dont touch it. I didn't change it and went back in and passed with nothing more than writing 2019 on the brake fluid cap...

Pads themselves have a minimum wear mark that the tester is supposed to visually check. Most of the lazy feckers have been just looking at the light on the dash, and passing well worn pads, or failing those still in spec but with damaged wiring causing the warning light to illuminate.

I understand it is being reworded suitably.

Yes. All brake pads have a wear indicators. Just like these front pads for Mondeo mk3 / Jag X-Type.

Them dirty diesels eh,

Since 20 May 2018, a total of 238,971 diesel cars and 505,721 petrol cars have failed the new emissions test.

Seems petrol engines are still worse polluters
