checking tyre pressure on twin rear wheels

Postby becky » Wed Aug 08, 2007 9:04 pm

while messing with the van, noticed the valves on the rear wheels.

the inside wheels valve points towards the outside, so is easy to check and inflate.

but the outside wheel valve points under the van and is sandwiched between the 2 wheels.

does a normal garage tyre inflator fit this, or do i need an adapter or do i have to proform karma sutra type positions.

i don`t want to try and deflat the tyre, not being able to inflat it again.

cheers kev
jumbos do it standing up....

If you go to your local (truck) tyre depot they should have the appropriate flexible adaptors to go on both valves on both sides, ask them nicely & I'm sure they would remove the wheels & fit them for you :D

If you look at the tyre inflators on petrol station forecourts you'll notice you can insert the valve from two directions...the normal way (push against valve) and also by inserting the valve into the back of the inflator and pulling to provide the seal.

Its quite fiddly but does work. The inside tyres on my van have the valves pointing the normal way but have extenders in the form of little plastic tubes with a bead in. Without these the inflator won't reach. When applying air pressure the bead gets blown to the other end of the tube and presses against the valve stem to allow air in. Not sure how you'd reduce the air pressure with these though...
