2003 2000 tdci, 54k miles - egr valve problem?

Postby JT23456 » Sun Aug 26, 2018 4:53 pm

Yes, 54k. I use it as a campervan. It ran fine in UK and after about 400 miles in France it started acting weird. Several times on 1st starting in the morning it has no power and lots of smoke, looks blue'ish. Won't rev. After 10-15 sec it goes back to normal. Never happened when driving, even up to 80 mph. I changed both fuel and air filters, and it went away for a month. This morning it did it again, after a normal start, 10 min drive and normal stop. I asked the UK mechanic where I get MOTs done and he suggested maybe an egr valve problem. There have been no engine lights. I haven't checked for any codes. Suggestions please.

There are no codes. Had them read twice now, a month ago and today. I guess the egr valve can act up for 15 sec and not register a fault ?? I ttold the shop today to replace the egr valve abd he said he wouldn't do it without codes. Suggestions?

Egr is vacuum controlled so I doubt you'll get a code of it, blank it off and see if the problem persists.

It is typical for still opened EGR - blocked in open position, not correctly closed after work during idle.
In Mk6 2,0/2,4 tdci EGR luckily hasn't position sensor - so you can blind it in... two minutes. Disconnect vacu pipe from EGR spigot and close this pipe (it can not suck air). EGR will stay still closed. It's all. You wouldn't have to think about EGR no more.
Only Mk6 tdci hasn't EGR sensor - rest models have EGR with position sensor and for EGR blinding you need use metal plate and a lot of work.
In my Mk6 tdci I have blinded EGR like that and done 400.000 km - I forgot I have EGR.

I pulled off the rubber hose and blocked it and also the metal tube it was pushed onto. I whacked toe valve several times to ensure it was seated closed and drove it around today 50 miles no issues. I'll post an update to give further experiences. Thanks for a great suggestion.
