Cigarette lighter on dash.

Postby mjsroofing » Thu Sep 13, 2018 12:33 pm

Mine seems to be permanent live , is there an easy way to change this to ignition live.

It's easy enough.

I dunno what your level of confidence with wiring is but here's what I'd do.

Get yourself some testers, off the top of my head there's a switched live in the radio harness so you just need to find it and swap the permanent feed for the ignition live. Fish it through the dash and you can just pull out the live but make sure it's taped up or something so it doesn't hit anything and blow the fuse.

To do it nicely the soldering is the best but I've never soldered anything on my vans, connector blocks or crimps have always been fine (I've been proper sketchy and just twisted stuff together plenty of times if I'm honest but that doesn't always last long).

Having said all this I do vaguely remember someone on here mentioning being able to change this in forscan so you may want to do some further research before butchering your wiring.

Err.....

Hold on, whilst that will give you an ignition live feed, it will not be able to carry the load that some "Accessories" could put on the circuit. At best you will blow the fuse for whatever , at worst you may burn out the wire or van..

The addition of a 30A relay to switch the high current feed would be the correct normal way to do it.

But if it can be done in forscan all the better.

I need to do this at some point.

Ah yeah good point!

I never run anything more than a phone charger so didn't really concider anything very powerful. I've no idea where there's an easy place to steal a better one from, I know there's one in the steering column somewhere but not sure of its current capacity.

I've never flattened my battery from phone chargers that are permanently plugged in on both if that makes a difference.

Swap the fuse feed for a switched live at the fuse box if it carries any decent loading.

As all I plug into mine is phone/race battery chargers, all I've done is fit a little LED rocker switch next to the socket and switched the +12V side.

I was hoping someone would of known what wire and fuse etc, I know a few on here probably know which one off the top of their head.

I'll have a look tomorrow.

But the fuse box wire swap is the way I be going.

On the top of the front drv side strut turret behind the dash you will find the main loom above and to the r/ hand side of the accelerator pedal there will be a single wire ,blue with a green trace in the loom terminated in a 1/4 female spade terminal this is an ignition live IT ONLY CARRIES 1 AMP this can be used to drive a relay
Get a 4 pin relay and wire it as follows pin 85 connects to the blue green wire pin 86 goes to a good ground cut the live wire of your accessory plug and the live side goes to pin 30 pin 87 then rejoins the the accessory plug
You can put a fuse inline if you want but as its already got one it's not required

I was just going to suggest exactly this. This is absolutely the correct way to do it.
As for fuses I would put a 2amp after the spade terminal under the steering column - just because I like fuses.
