Do you plan on getting it all up and running then swapping the gearbox over or can you pre select our whatever the standard gear setup then add the 2/4 selection later?

It's all one box, front half an mt82 with a transfer/Dropbox bolted on the back.
It'll go in and I can just leave it in 2High range if the electronics arnt ready. This is what it looks like.... Image
But still need to make subframe spacers, rear gearbox mount crossmember(might be going a bit heavy on this nut rather it didn't break on the first outing ), gear selector cable brackets and shorten the propshaft to fit. Oh and move the fuel tank so not much......

VREF voltage is almost certainly 5V as you have assumed.

Its a standard voltage used in electronics and definitely what ford generally use ( for that reason )

Gid'day
Well what would you know??? Ive been going down this track as well but was looking at using an Auto box, (to get floor mounted gear stick out the way) but ran into a hole lot of electronic problems ABS just one of them and having to change the ECU's etc etc. so put it on the back burner so to speak.( this is out of my league)
Have heard this conversion has been or been done in Sydney Australia. with a cost of something like 12k, (out my League also). so haven't followed it through.
So I'm following this thread with interest as its still in my mind to do the conversion and will be interested how you go.
The other though i"m been thinking is maybe using using LT 230 drop box (or similar) and using a Mazda/courier BT 50 front diff . it goes down the right side so don't have to move tank, and i have done a dummy set up and looks like it will miss the steering rack.
Steering shaft has to be extended and sub frame made also using a solenoid to with dash switches to change the HI/LO / 4x4 ratios.
As been said front hubs no problem its just a matter of match splines etc etc.
watching with interest.

Meant to mention as well been told the Mazda diffs can have lockers fitted which is a bonus. only things is trying to match diff ratios, as I would like to keep my 4.6 as at the moment its doing 6/9 ks per 100 so fuel economy is good and like to keep that with the price of fuel over here.

Cheers tranny
Yea auto box just wasn't even a consideration, I don't see the point in them unless your doing mega town/M25 parking lot type driving and especially if your looking at fuel economy, milage. Autos are thirsty!
The beauty of the mt82 is it's "bolt on" (I hope) and the total cost will, I hope" not be prohibitive, though I'm only costing my parts not my labour at the mo.....

Would love to know more about it if anyone has used ranger parts as I couldn't find any mention of it while taking arround online before.

Lockers are not a big concern as not intending to be doing any overlanding type brutal offroading and reckon in low box the ESP should act as a lock and hopefully have enough grunt even if PCM derates throttle.

So... tomorrow (wed) it starts!

Got the use of a mates workshop, while he's away for a couple of days, to get the van on the ramps and get the old box out and new box in!
Will hopefully get everything I need loaded up and down there early avo to get the propshaft off ready to drop it for shortening on Thurs.
Get tank out, get box out, get clutch out.
Check and order if there's anything needed that I don't already have.
Finnish off gear linkage and steering mods and throw the box at the van
Add the new box cross member and stick it all back together
Adjust the tank and pipework put prop back on and we're off
Like it's going to be that easy
The high/low 4x4 ranges can wait till after it's In.

Will keep you all posted

So down to the workshop and started stripping bits off, had to do it on the ground at first as the ramps were being used. Got the prop off and the tank out before they were free, then got the van lifted to a better hight for working. Image
Dropped the subframe, what an absolute ballache!!! All bolts seized as fook. but got there and got the box out, dual mass flywheels gone solid, clutch plate is just on the border of shining the rivets so glad I've got a new one to go in only problem it's a larger diameter than the original so out with the tape and check things, looks like I need a new starter (old ones on it's way out anyway) but one that's got the stepped nose housing.
Then had a wee mild panic as looking at the bolt holes I thought the whole box might not fit so decided to throw it up and see how it fits anyway. ImageImageImage
So it fits! and without too much interference
So made some more measurements and double checked things before I take prop to the multi coloured prop shop
And while the G-box was in I thought I'd offer up the front diff to see how it looks. Think that's going to be more fun than I'm having putting the box in.

I have been on many forums over 20+ years where people have had unusual or ( f....ing stupid ) ideas ... this one has always seemed closer to the probably possible and I admire your efforts and ingenuity.. Sometimes people try to insist on doing things that are entirely foolish (because they CAN.. or in fact can't at all).. but this one has a glimmer or even more chance of being fruitful..

Doing well air, have to admit I don’t understand much technical stuff, but I appreciate the effort you’re going to.
