Starting issue. Fuel not in filter

Postby maccavvy » Fri Sep 21, 2018 8:04 pm

Yesterday when I started my van ..took 4 to 5 seconds of cranking ..odd I thought. Drove and started fine all day .

This morning worse. Took fuel filter off it was a third full. So filled it up and kept going till bled though..started and drove fine all day ..

Got a new fuel filter to go on just in case. Only serviced a week ago using Mann filters. Been fine until yesterday.

Where should I be looking ..what's the most likely issue.cant have this every morning

No & No, sorry.

If the Ford one has cracked then it ain't much better than a cheap substandard one

It has been popular on this forum in the past to blame non standard filters.

Try a genuine ford fuel filter.....

mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

well that looked like a simple fix.. the Mann filter that was put on at service was not very tight fit .

the one I grabbed from local motor spares to try was a much tighter fit and has started fine when left over night..
thanks guys

I was wrong...it started fine for a few days ..
Then half empty filter in the morning again.
I've been out and fitter bought a new genuine filter housing with genuine filter.
Started after 3-4 seconds of turning over.
Same when warm too now
I'm at a loss. Getting codes read tomorrow.
Will update with those

Could be a split or leaking injector leakage return line.
System needs to be airtight otherwise fuel drains back down to the tank when the van is stopped.

I can't see any visible leaks anywhere.
Think the garage is gonna have to sort this one
Any info I can pass on will help though.
Or if something is cheap enough I'll try it on anyways

In this case fuel doesn't leak out....the air leaks in....so you won't see it. As mentioned, it's often the injector leak-back o-rings or the lines themselves. All low pressure/suction fuel lines and connectors on the engine side of the filter should be checked.

would it be worth changing the O rings just to rule out .. im taking they are available separately and where are they .
I know my way around spanners but hate diesel engines.

I remember changing the solid pipe a few years back that sits atop of all the injectors. dont know what that does but it wouldnt run as it had a hole in it

tell me what and where ill try to rule it out.. appreciate the help

Use fresh engine oil or grease when fitting the new seals.
They are very soft and easy to damage.
