stop start battery voltages

Postby Dazza007 » Wed Sep 26, 2018 7:11 am

Ive got a mk7 that no longer stop/starts. I tested batteries while the van was switched off immediately after a 30 mile drive, one was reading 14v and the other 12v. I swapped them around as a process of elimination but it still doesn't work. Do both batteries have to be 14v? Is 12v too low for the S/S system? Ive added a small solar panel to keep the weaker battery topped up but still it doesn't work. My mechanic fitted a new starter motor which he said wasn't stop start capable but the eco light goes out after start up so I think he might be wrong.

Any ideas?

If your charging system is working properly a good battery will be showing at least 13V at the poles after driving 30 miles. As your other battery is showing 14V it would indicate the charging system IS working correctly. In which case the problem will lie in either:

a) the cabling: check the connectors are clean, corrosion free and secure, especially the earth cable.
b) the battery itself needs replacing.
Drink moderately, eat healthily, exercise regularly, die anyway.

Just to add to this, got my van which was sat there months, started it possibly with a jump as it was damaged and I had to replace the fuel filter Bowl and purge the system.
Stop start worked initially.

Stop start worked maybe a dozen times and stopped.
That was maybe over a year since and it never worked at all.

Been to Ford for a service and software security updates and instantly stop start was again working, that was a few weeks since.

Stop start has stopped working again

I did press the off button as I was in traffic etc so maybe it doesn't know how to turn on again and the software update which we know does reset everything is what it needed to get it going? Maybe learned values of driving habits program whether it is more useful working or not?

Who the Hell knows these things :x
Altransit will suggest the batteries Ford fits are silver calcium and not good for stop start, which too may be another valid point :P 8)

I bought the van in Dec and it worked for around a week. Its been to ford who said both batteries are ok according to their tests. Regarding the new starter motor; whats the difference between a stop/start non-stop/start?

What I've noted, from reading up on the subject, is that you really need AGM, or at least EFB, batteries for stop-start to work properly, because they're better able to maintain full starting current, even when partially discharged.

Having said all that, I duly fitted a brand new EFB battery in the Focus, to see if the stop-start would start working more reliably than it had, with the Silver Calcium battery that I had previously fitted. I would have fitted the superior AGM battery, but not only are they more than double the price of an EFB battery, but they don't come in the correct size to fit the battery tray :!:

Any road up, even with the new and correct battery fitted, it still hardly ever works :!:  :P

It's not so bad with a manual gearbox, because the stop-start won't work if you're in gear with the clutch down, waiting to pull away.

It's a largely useless "toy" that doesn't work most of the time in my experience, but having driven an automatic Caddy van with it fitted, which had a habit of stopping just as you were pulling out of a junction, I prefer the manual setup which at least is more controllable.

I was sitting in a long queue at a level crossing the other day, and had to turn off the engine manually because the stop-start was having a bad day
