MK6 clutch issues

Postby Eddie78 » Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:23 pm

I know there has been a few threads regarding clutches on these

I have a 2.4tddi mini bus 5speed I have owned it for just over a month and the clutch has been bit of pig since day 1 (got her cheap due to clutch issues)

It has had single flywheel conversion done 2 years ago no evidence to prove this.

when clutch pedal is fully pressed to the floor selecting gears is alittle tight and notchy biting point is very low, I was hoping it was a hydraulic issue, tried bleeding the system made zero difference,

If driving in traffic so a lot of stop starting things get worse as things get warmer,

today went to press the clutch and pop the slave cylinder blew apart, it was a ford item so suspect it had been on for a long long time.

anyways been sunday with limited options managed to get a second hand unit which fortunately I got to try before removal and appeared to be fine.

Fitted to my bus and now got a running driving van again and the clutch is the same as before low biting point and crap at selecting gears, so quite confident it was not the slave cyl to blame,

so whats the most likely suspect clutch itself or mastercylinder?

I am confident it is fully bleed off but when pressing the pedal there is about 1/2 inch of dead movement not free play as you can feel resistance (might be the spring in mastercyl I can feel) then after the 1/2 inch its the full weight as you would expect. when bleeding I did it the normal way not back bleeding

Any advice Guys thank you

Try reverse bleeding it you can do it by connecting a pipe from front brake calaper to slave cylinder with rubber pipe and using that to bleed it if not got the correct tool

It could be the slave cylinder, I believe the ones for dmf have less travel then the SMF ones, if you have the wrong CSC that could be your problem.

the one that was fitted and the one I replaced it with was "standard oem" 20.35m bore gen ford item.

Had quick look online and the only bore sizes I could see where 20.65mm which would give me a lighter pedal but less throw at the box end.

Will give it a go nothing to lose but time, are these quite susceptible to air in the systems

Last night the van was back up and running clutch been as it always is not quite fully clearing etc..... jumped in this morning to do some jobs and and the clutch is the best it ever has been I can select gears without double pumping or getting the engine revs right, it's not perfect but I would say it's 99% there if it stays the way it is then it is more than acceptable, if you didn't know the van and jumped in and drove it you probs wouldn't think anything was wrong specially bearing in mind she has 265k on the clock

I've had a few mk6 transits that's been the same with gear selecting, I've just went for lubricating the sh*t out the housing on too of the gearbox where gear cables connect. I've found they tend to dry up. So now I always make sure tits not dry.

As daft as it sounds if Mrs worked for me.
