Another transit Mk 7 fan problem

Postby Boxster1 » Tue Oct 09, 2018 12:54 pm

Hi
I have a Transit MK7 petrol/LPG with an Electric fan.
When I start the van from cold, the fans will kick in after about 15 mins driving.
i usually cover 150 - 200 miles per day. Both fans will run continuously the whole journey, switching between low speed and high speed.
I guess the resistors and relays can be ruled.
The van is showing no error codes.
I think a sensor somewhere is faulty. Having read many of the posts on this forum I am no closer to sorting the problem.
Can somebody please help.

What code reader are you using..?? Some readers just aren't up to the task...IDS or Forscan are your best bet.

Yeah sounds to me like aircon kicking in. Is there an obvious surge in engine power when the fan kicks in?

I guess another thing to check would be if there is some kind of thermostat for that fan which may be set too low or even faulty? Check the relays/fuses related to that fan and troubleshoot with known good ones?

The relay for the high speed fan is in an auxiliary relay box underneath the engine compartment fuse box screwed to the wheel arch behind the LH head light. You might need to unscrew the bracket holding the windscreen wiper reservoir filler in place to get your hand down in there.

There should be 3 groups of relays down there. A group of 4 - (from left to right/top to bottom as you are looking at them) - AR1, AR2, AR3 and AR4. AR5 and AR6 are below the group of 4. And AR7 and AR8 (not used) are to the right of the group of 4. AR7 should be your one I believe

Also Fuse # 29 & #33 (both Green 40A fuses) in the engine compartment are the fuse(s) for the Engine Cooling Fan (2.3L DOHC engines)

**Note** In my owners manual, it says that *fuse #33 "should be replaced by Ford Dealership". Only a handful of fuses listed have this advice next to them so might be worth getting a second opinion before messing with that one.

Hope any of this helps!

Hi

The code reader software is made by Delphi, it runs on a laptop.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I plan on having a look this weekend.

What does your temp gauge read and what country are you in aas at this time of year in uk you'll struggle to get a fan on, my temp gauge sits a hair below halfway and it's been that way all year and its only when i put AC on that the fans kick in
Inside the cab on the right hand side of the heater box there's a little micro switch that clicks on AC when turn to screen de-mist ,maybe faulty switch, could unplug and see if it helps any
There's a unit between both fans on the cowling, the fan contoller if thars faulty it should show on diagnostics

Hi andz327

When starting from cold, after about 10 minutes the temp gauge is pointing to 12 oclock.
And stays there even when running the Air con.
I am in the UK

So far I have changed the thermostat and the fan control module.
Changing these items made no difference.

I have now invested in a Elm327. It is showing one error
Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1.
Voltage amplitude and voltage threshold Value 999.9mv Min 500.0mv Max 0.0mv.

Because the weather is colder now running on petrol for the first 10 mins is very lumpy.
Then I switch to LPG and thats lumpy for another 10 mins. Even longer on a cold day.

Although ELM327 is showing a faulty Oxygen sensor. This may be due to the engine not heating up because the fans run continuously after about 10 mins driving.
So it might be a faulty temperature sensor and not the Oxygen Sensor.
As the Temp sensor is cheaper I will probably change that first.

PS Where is the temp sensor located ??
