Wrapping Residue

Postby goons » Sat Oct 13, 2018 9:41 am

Recently bought a white mk7. It was obviously wrapped/sign written in a previous life as there is a residue starting to show that gets blacker as time goes on. Can anyone recommend whats good for removing it?

Some say tar remover, I find brake cleaner best.
Spay on a bit let it soften the glue then with a soft rag also soaked in brake clean, rub off glue. Ad more brake clean for stubborn old glue.
Also heard folk using wd40/petrol/nailpolish remover etc.(anything to soften the glue) but I'm not convinced they won't affect the paintwork more.

As a courier thats worked for most firms I remove a livery at least once every 2 years. And I hate doing it.

Glue and tar remover is good, Isopropanol is better. Apply either with a rag to the reisdue and then use a cloth that has a thicker weave than a duster (like an old style dishcloth) to rub the stuff off as it will take more off with each stroke. Dont forget to wash the van well after as I've known paint to react if its left on there. Nothing too serious but it reflects light differently in the sun to the rest of the paint and water runs off it differently in the rain, if that makes sense.

It might want some t-cut or a mop after you get the gunk off as you will still be able to see what the old stickers said in the paint what with paint fading due to the sun. I spent ages t-cutting mine back to remove the UK Mail livery and like BJT says I can still see it in a certain light.

Im not having any more livery on my vans (like it says below!) as its too much of a bugger to remove.

I'm a sign fitter and have to remove replace these stickers.

We mostly use turps to get off glue it takes a while sometimes especially if its starting to go black and has got covered in muck but with a soft cloth and enough effort you'll get it off. Putting it in a spay bottle helps.

You can use loads of solvents, most work, panel wipe or paint thinners is especially good. Wd40 does a pretty good job as does isopropanol.

If you're feeling flush avery do a glue removing solution for about £15 for 500ml that works great but stinks!

Lighter fuel from Poundland, the important part is the cloth you use to remove the glue residue, it needs to capture it rather than spread it around. Micro fibres are good. :?
