Axle Swapped :)

Postby twin--turbo » Thu Oct 18, 2018 8:40 pm

Garage has swapped out my Whining 5.11 axle for a 3.73 on MY 100 T350..

It's lovely!

No drone, whine, it's actually quite quiet!!

Acceleration is still brisk enough, in fact it actually feels better as your not getting into 5th early.

2K RPMish at 62MPH ( Need to get the limiter deleted.)

The axle cost £150, and the fitting was £225.. I could technicaly have done the swap but it's a heavy lump and you have to blead the breaks and everything else and it's cold!!

Hopefully the lower RPM will give a bit of a fuel economy increas and over time it will pay for itself..

Well Happy...

Now just got to.

Fit my leather wheel.
Fit my rear 2 seater bench.
Find and fit a sliding glazed door ( now I can travel to pick one up in silence )

Rock on!!

Re: Proper mk7 4x4. (none of yr namby pamby AWD nonsense)

Why not look out for a window to put in your door? Or even two for the cash you save on a door?
Not that hard to fit windows if you get the right stuff.

It's ~75 for a basic window ~£20 for a fitting kit. Or £150 to supply and fit locally.

I have seen full doors for £120. And that's with a proper Minibus opening side window.

Mine has a couple of dents in it.

Just not had a means of reliably collecting until my axle was not sounding like death.

It was there most of the time, I initially thought it was the box as it sounded so close. But I removed the bulkhead and the noise then seemed much further back.

Very interested in this swap too.

Did you (your mechanic) swap the whole unit or just the internals of the diff itself?

Had a thought - might it cost the same to swap the gearbox? Will result be comparable to axle swap?

You can do either depending on condition of everything else, brakes, hubs etc.

No.

Thanks, would you mind explaining the differences with each? Gearbox swap or axle swap.

Forget this, read other post where you kindly commented.

Swapping the axle internals is a much more time and skill consuming job. So swapping the entire unit is vastly cheaper.

Still happy..

Will pull my car transporter with a large Family saloon with reasonable performance on the flat , does require some work on hilly stuff..

Are twin wheeled and single wheeled axles the same?

No.
The single has 2 wheels
the dual has 4

Everything is different apart from the diff I'm led to believe
