I think Ford call it "resonator".

What’s its purpose?

Ordered new intercooler pipes but it didn’t include this section so was wondering if it’s something that lasts a lifetime

I don't think there's much in it to be honest...

most modern intakes have this, its to reduce the intake noise and absorb reflections. in some cars its designed to help the intake shockwaves get more air into the engine (the italians do this) or make the sound more "designed" (the germans do this).

here is one from alfa:

lots of people cut the thing off or fit a simple pipe, but they also lose performance in this case. the resonator box does nothing in this case to dampen te sound, it actually makes it worse in the case of alfa. the italians are notourious for completly ignoring EU laws with regards to engine noise.

its the same thing with the venturi intake pipe, lots of japanese cars have a venturi intake to get more air into the engine while damping the sound.
