Help with blanking Egr...or not.

Postby TransitNomad » Mon Nov 05, 2018 12:17 am

Hello,
I've searched around and can't seem to find a precise answer to this!
I was driving home one evening and lost power in my van with a noise that sounded like the exhaust had fallen off but coming from the front! Turns out my egr pipe had popped out of the egr! I had no idea what an egr valve was before then so I just used a stick and pushed the egr valve onto the pipe, quick fix, got me the 300km I needed to go.

I've now read that I can blank it off, can I fit a blanking plate to the egr valve and leave the pipe loose? Or would I need to seal up the dislocated pipe too? Anyone have a diagram of where it goes?

I was told by a mechanic friend that I'd have to take the engine out to replace the pipe! Is this true?

He is a million miles away from a test station
OP if you remove the fan then remove the engine crossmember bolts from the chassis and drop the engine you will get at it without removing the engine :wink:Leave the rad and front in.

Just blank that evil valve off, nasty little b*stards they are, if you use a blanking plate there's no need to disconnect the vac pipe

I wouldn't bother cleaning the egr but would clean the inlet manifold as it'll be gunked up.

There are plenty of blanking plates on eBay for.not a lot of money, is your van fwd or rwd ?

Sorry for not replying guys, I've been full pelt!

To clarify, I'm from Glasgow but currently in Spain mooching around (exploring). I need to make the question clearer, The pipe coming from behind the engine to the egr valve has dislocated from the flat plate with the bolt holes which secures it to the egr valve so putting the blanking plate on wont even solve the problem. I jammed a stick in front of the EGR to push it onto the pipe but it keeps popping off.

I've given up and papped her into a ford garage in Andalucia... here's hoping its not a long job at $60 an hour!

I doubt an MOT dude would notice this, he'd have to remove the pipe to be able to tell!

Anyway, MOT? pfffttt if it goes, it goes!
