Knocking on Steering rack Mk7

Postby rainfallgr » Tue Nov 20, 2018 1:29 pm

Hello

I have a van build 10/2008 in Turkey.
I have 68.000km done so far, and i found play in both side in front axle.
Play is not from bearing as last week i replaced it.

Is not from track rod end bit from either inner rods or steering rack. I haven't ooen boots to check
How possible is it for both side to have inner rods faulty?

Did these vans have problem with steering rack?

I read somewhere that theybare adjustable. Is this true?

Inner tie rods are not adjustable. When worn out, simply replace

I know that inner rods aren't adjustable.

My questions were:
1. Is inner rods a common fail for Transits made in Turkey
2. Is the steering rack adjustable? To maybe remove the play as i have it in both sides

How long do they last, that depends on driving style & road conditions. But they do fail eventually on any vehicle

Adjustability to remove play. Not possible. Replace worn out part is the only safest option :!:

Yes they do fail, but failing both sides at 50k miles is weird. And if inner rods are ok, rack failing at 50k miles is again weird.
Van does mostly high way miles about 5-6k miles every year

Do you get play when engine running? If play gone with engine running don't worry about it,
Also
Get someone to press footbrake and see if play disappears maybe youve been supplied wrong bearings, if play is gone when footbrake is pressed it's a bearing problem

Yes i have play with engine running and brakes pressed.
I also have a knocking sound and feel under my feet if i turn the steering wheel fast, right and left. And as I said before track rods are fine. The play is either from inner rods or steering rack

Rack seem very firmly attached. With no play in it. Also as said in my previous post play is either from inner tie rods , or steering rack.
If the play is indeed in steering rack, i read that there is a hexagonal bolt that tightens the rack. Can this be used to adjust the play? Again IF it's from the steering rack.
If it's from inner tie rods i will replace them off course.

But it's weird as the play is similar to both sides
