Cold diesel knock! :(

Postby dan83590 » Wed Jan 16, 2019 9:47 am

Seems I need your help again.

Diesel knock, bad diesel knock, sounds hideous for the first few miles when cold then completely back to normal for the rest of the day.

Any clues?

Oil is good, serviced but not recent, shes a good un, well looked after.

Have you had the codes read..? I'm guessing the timing solenoid on the fuel pump is not well.

So the codes were read and came back as Fuel Timing Error. Then whilst running the van stalled and when restarted no codes, then the fuel timing error returned.

Down on power now big time struggles to pull past 3000 rpm.

There you go, probably the timing solenoid as I mentioned. Might pay to check the wiring to the pump before doing anything costly, they can be temperamental.

Right, not good news.

The fuel pump is worn and there is not a chance I can afford the cost to have the garage repair the darned thing.

So, tell me...

Is the fuel pump a job that can be done at home?

Is there a write up anywhere?

I had hoped i would never have to do driveway repairs again but hey ho, sh*t happens!

Unlikely the pump has died, is this what your mechanic said..?? I'm guessing it's probably just the timing solenoid, this can be done at home....many have done it. It's worth checking to see if it is the solenoid first before throwing money at a pump you may not need.

There's two different pumps depending on which engine you have, VP30 for the lower ps ones and VP44 for the higher PS jobbies.

Mine is a VP30.

The mech says it would be false economy to only change the solenoid (i guess they would say that).

Of course they would say that.. The old TDDi pumps are pretty robust, it's the bits hanging off it that fail most of the time.

Ok great. I'll look into that.

Can it be swapped with the pump in place?

Its the VP30 as fitted to the 90ps 2.4 TDDi

Difficult, but doable. There's chaps on here who could advise better than I. Mine's a Mk7 TDCi.

I took a look at where the solenoid was when i was last under the van, mine is rear wheel drive it looked quite restricted there but doable with a bit of patience looked like i needed a torx allen key and probably the removal or moving to one side of some hoses. But taking the pump off more bits would have to come off.
