starter engagement when hot

Postby Chris the builder » Sat Jan 19, 2019 1:48 pm

Here's one for you.
Mk7 2008 with 170k on her. Satrts first time every time when cold but when hot the starter motor sometimes doesnt engage at all and sometimes only turns the engine once before disengaging with a whirring noise which lasts a second or three.
Tried letting the glow plugs get fully warm for five to ten seconds but doesn't seem to make a difference. It'll start eventually after four or five goes but then it'll be with a bit of smoke.
Anyone else had this problem?
Chris.

Probably the starter motor not happy when hot, either needs replaced or cleanout.

Had the same problem with my 2008 mk7 fwd 85ps last year put a new starter on and all ok.
the red lead connector from the alternator was heavily corroded at the starter end and crumbled when taken off, this might have been the problem but renewed both.

I have had that problem in the past, no issues when cold but a pig to start when hot, one day I stalled at traffic lights and the starter gave up completely, new starter fitted and been fine for 3 years now :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Will pick up a new starter asap. Did any of you fit it yourselves? Looked on youtube yesterday and it looks like a tricky job to gain access!
