Squeaking noise from pulleys/belt

Postby TransitNomad » Tue Feb 12, 2019 6:46 pm

Hi all,
I have a MK6 Transit, RWD 2.4 350 (non turbo). About a month ago a squeak developed under the hood, It would start in the morning then disappear about 30 seconds later with high revs.
It got worse so I sprayed some wd40 on the pulleys and it got even worse! I was told it was probably the belt tensioner bearings by a garage so to day I bought a new one and installed it. I started the van and it was gone.... for about a minute. Is there any chance it could be the belt itself or do I have to change each pulley to find out which one it is, its so hard to tell!
I can't stand the squeak, please help!

Edit - I also spilled some coolant when I removed the hose, about 3-400ml, do I need to replace that?

Ours always had a squeak even with a new belt turned the belt round and that stopped it for a while.

I'll try that then, It's really driving me nuts, I can't stand noises when I'm driving.

It may not have an intercooler, if it's a 75ps model, but all of them have a turbocharger :)

Is there any rusty marks around crank pulley, i had a squeek that started driving me nuts and it ended up being crank pulley was split and it left a rusty dust around the casing at the pulley

Hi,

I had the same problem and yes WD40 does make it worse, I believe because the belt is slipping.

I replaced the belt tensionser and put on a new belt. But it was still squeaking not as bad.

So I removed the belt and cleaned all the pulleys the belt runs on with some solvent and that cured the issue.

That was over 12 months ago. Its ran perfect since.

That's a rare one then...As mentioned by the other lads....I think you'll find "ALL" diesel transits from 2000 onwards have turbo's, only the 75ps has no intercooler.

Have a good look at the crank pulley, they're prone to coming apart.

Silicone Spray is better than WD40 to eliminate squeaks, short term.
I’ve had the same problem with my van recently....long story but a new belt fitted last weekend seems to have cured it...

Since my last post, I replaced the pulley and it was still squeaking intermittently... Then after a week it stopped! Happy days! Thanks for the help!

I had this problem it is maddening. Got to the point it was almost embarrasing to drive around in!
Changed various pulleys on a trial and error mission, in the end the idler one was the culprit but even then the noise only stopped when a (second) new belt was fitted.
Less than two years and 10k miles down the line it's creeping back intermittently, so not happy but not overly concerned right now.
It seems to be pulley related as it drops when the clutch goes in/neutral and the rpms come down.
Will watch this thread with interest!
