Replacing a shock help (failed MOT fun)

Postby khaito » Tue Apr 16, 2019 1:49 pm

Van failed its MOT yesterday and the garage refused to take on the work welding a few bits, never mind the rest of it, 'cause they're busy. So can anyone point me to some good guides on how to replace a rear shock on a MK6? I've never done it before.
I reckon I can handle the suspension ball joint replacements (CV joints, I think?) and I can probably figure out the hand brake to fix it but I don't have space to work on the van that's not on a public street so can't do the welding myself (that and I've never welded car bodywork so I've no idea wtf I'm doing beyond a basic comprehension of the process  ) so figure I'll phone every garage I can find in London to see if anyone will even take on the work then I'll fix the other parts myself after.

Any links or pointers to articles on here or elsewhere are much appreciated. I had a hunt but I think I need a video and/or some pictures :o
I'm off to try and find a garage who'll do the welding

For anyone interested, full fail list is as follows:
Major defects
Shock absorber has a serious fluid leak - NSR
Suspension component ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt - NSF lower
Suspension component ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt - OSF lower
Service brake efficiency below requirements
Windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively - OSF (already got a replaement arm to fit)
Vehicle structure is fractured and structural rigidity is significantly reduced - nearside inner (under side loading door .. inner seal) 6.1.1 (a)(i)
Vehicle structure is fractured and structural rigidity is significantly reduced - Offside inner (inner seal under a driver step) 6.1.1 (a)(i)
Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced - Nearside rear (near rear leaf spring shackle) 6.1.1 (c)(i)
Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced - Offside rear (near rear leaf spring shackle) 6.1.1 (c)(i)
Floor excessively deteriorated - nearside rear inner (inner arch) 6.2.4 (a)(i)
Minor
rear reg plate lamp needs a bulb
Monitor:
Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced - central rear lower (under a bumper) 6.1.1 (c)(i)

Ha! Ignore me, I'm an idiot who didn't check her Haynes manual online subscription first. Found a video there.

Any chance that anyone knows a garage in the greater London area who'll do welding on a ford transit? So far everyone I've phoned either doesn't do welding or doesn't do vans.
