Fuel pump/starter

Postby timewarptel » Thu Apr 18, 2019 4:48 pm

Hi all, need some info please. Have a mk 6/7 rwd van, and I think my fuel pump has gone. Done that thing where you squirt easy start into air intake, as your turning the ignition. And it did momentarily fire up, but wouldn’t run. Tried this a few times, and it made a terrible clanking noise. Now my starter motor just makes a whirring noise and won’t crank. Are the two things related, or just coincidence? Also is there a relay that’s Identical to the fuel pump relay, whereby I can do a swap to test it out. Thanks, terry

Well the first bits of info we need to quess what's wrong are -

Is it a mk6 or a mk7
is it common rail.
Has an attempt been made to jump start it - don't do it
Was it running and died, or is this a failure to start.
When you tried easy start what actually happened, did it run gently or scream it's n*ts off.
Have you actually got fuel in the tank.
When was the last oil change.
Is the oil level correct.
What grade of oil is in it.
Has if had a fuel filter change recently.
Can you get the fault codes read.
Is the battery ( or batteries ) properly charged.

I could go on but people are usually getting bored by now.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Hi, v8 Dave. It’s a mk6, without common rail
Yes there is fuel in tank, yes battery is fully charged
Correct oil at correct level
No fuel filter change recently
It is a failure to start
It screamed it’s nuts off, with the easy start.
Will try to test the pump relay, or substitute another, if there’s one like it in fuse box
Thanks for your input, terry

I hoped you would not say that.

The original problem might have been something like the fuel pump, the power relay for it, the crankshaft sensor, etc.

Unfortunately, it is now possible the timing chan has jumped and done damage to the valve gear - hence the clanking noise.

Thanks Dave, ....right now, I’m just getting a light whirring noise when I turn ignition. Also, I thought timing chain could only jump, if you tried bump starting.
