loose barrel, van turns off

Postby toddtulk » Tue Apr 23, 2019 11:17 am

Hi everyone.
Im so happy to be here.
I have a Ford Transit van 2009. I have had keys hanging off the main key that in-turn has made the barrel of the ignition loosen therefor shutting the van off.
I have found a bungy cord pulling it in the other direction keeps it going (so I could get home).
Any ideas on how to fix it. The Ford dealer want $1200 to replace the barrel and issue two new keys!
Can I change the barrel myself.
Thanks for your help.

It will probably be the ignition switch which is playing up, it lives on the back of the barrel assy. If the barrel assy is badly worn it may pay to replace it also.

You can change the barrel yourself if you feel you can, it's not too difficult......but any new/different keys will need to be coded to the van using IDS.

Key barrel kit is easy to fit, if a bit fiddley. You can build up the tumbler discs to suit your present keys.
