Transit MK7 Captain Swivel Seats...Doable?

Postby Marky B » Sat Jun 22, 2019 11:50 am

Hi all,

I know this is probably a subject that many want to know or may have already been covered elsewhere (I searched but couldn't find the answers to my questions).

I own a standard MK7 2008 SWB and I'm currently in the planning stages of converting it to a camper/day van.

Before asking my questions though, I'd like you to know that I have conducted some research on buying a swivel plate for the double passenger seat, I've also looked at trying to get hold of a matching single passenger seat (blue bubble pattern) so I could simply put a swivel plate on that and save the hassle. But what I discovered was the swivel plate for the double bench seat is quite clumsy and defeats the object of having a swivel seat as you need to get out of the van to swivel the seat round judging from what I've seen on this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffUKGqWLHI8 ) and to get hold of a matching single passenger seat at an 'UNDER INFLATED' reasonable price is like trying to find a hen with teeth.

So I figured I'd look down the 'change both front seats to something completely different' route instead.

So I'm hoping that some of you guys know, or have carried out this type of conversion can offer me some valuable pointers?

I'm aware that there might be a little bit of fabrication work involved to make some random generic captain seats fit, but my main issue is the drivers seat with the wiring for the airbag. How can this be done or is there a work around for the airbag wiring?

Cheers,
Mark

The airbag is in the seatbelt isn't it so as long as you use the correct buckle fitment then there shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a passenger mk7 seat base.

So now you have a blank canvass, get 2 single swivels and maybe 2 st seats to weld on, adjust the handbrake height or whatever. Bobs your mother's brother 8)

Thanks loot,

I'll have to double check that. I wasn't aware that the airbag wiring is in the seat belt. Any tips on the best fitting seats or does it not matter? I've seen a few random post about specifically fitting Ford Galaxy or VW Sharan swivelling seats to the Transit? True? False?

No idea lol but as long as the rails match the seat base then it is probably only left to your imagination. Sharan seats etc might have been a good fit and some older ones probably have electronic motors that only need power to get working so maybe they are fully electronically adjustable 8)
I have read others that say you just drill new mounting holes in the seat rails and base to allow you to bolt them up, welding is possible but if you make a mistake then it is probably not going to allow for adjustments etc.

Rumblebee fitted fiesta recaro seats to his mk7.

To fit my mk6 swivels to my mk8 I had to re drill two of the holes in the swivel to fit them also my drivers seat had a wire plug on it for seat belt or air bag never traced it just un plug it to fit swivel and re fitted it afterwards my van came with a single passenger seat from new it doesn’t have any wiring to it
