Lowering Fuel Tank

Postby nottery » Mon Jul 22, 2019 3:22 pm

Was wondering how difficult it is to lower the tank to diagnose & repair a leak, not sure whether its from a cracked filler/breather hose, or a screw from the ply lined floor (my bad). Only happens when the tank is full. Tank is less that 1/4 full ATM. Can you just lower it a little? My only concern is, when disconnecting all the hoses is it possible to get air in the fuel lines?

If it is a hole in the top of the tank from a screw... I have read people saying you can repair with a screw coated in sealant, a rivet, Hot glue gun, or Epoxy resin,
Think i am leaning towards Epoxy resin.

Whats your recommended method?

Thanks.

As for lowering the tank if you get it low on fuel support it on a trolley jack with a pice of wood on top to spread the weight undo the tank straps and slowly lower the tank release the pipes from the clips on body it will come down low enough to get a good look at the top of it

i have this issue too (SWB mk7 FWD 85ps) didnt think of the screw issue but i didnt fit my flooring, i assumed it was one of the upper access hatches leaking, doesn't seem to be the filler or breather on mine either but will watch this with interest!

see this thread too

Had a quick look under the van today to see what the job entailed and noticed the breather tube was cracked near the union on the tank. The whole breather tube looked in bad shape. Could definitely see fuel running down the side of tank coming from the top after filling up. Possibly from the cracked breather, but won't know until i drop the tank a bit. Have about 1/8 of a tank ATM, Hopefully get some dry weather tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

HI from John 'down under'in Aussieland
How did you go lowering the tank? Mine leaks if filled right up (for a long trip etc) Would like to know how much I can lower it without straining the inlet/outlet fuel lines and level sensor cabling etc.
Thanks

When I lowered my mk 6 I only dropped it about 6 inches and that was on a ramp it was very low on fuel and I removed the filler pipe at side of the van . If you want to lower it even more you should be able to unclip the pipes on the body enough to lower it a bit more and unclip the pipes on the sender unit .the mk8 was more difficult as I had to twist the tank to lower it.

undo the 2 jubilee clips for the 2 hoses, jack under the middle, undo the 4 bolts, itll lower to the ground without having to undo the fuel lines, the leak when full is usually from a cracked breather hose

Thanks, this sounds a logical source of leak
