speedometer and rpm gauge sometimes drops

Postby wilbertd » Tue Oct 22, 2019 9:45 am

Hey, sometimes the speedometer and rpm gauge on my Tourneo will drop to zero, sometimes together with the temp gauge. but not always.
If I hit the reset on the odometer the meters come back up, and sometimes stay up for hours, sometimes they drop right back after a few seconds.
Any idea's what this can be and how to fix it?

Cheers,
Wilbert

Mk6 clocks often suffer from poor/dry solder joints, sometimes a re-flow of the solder on the main connector helps.

Thanks for the tip. Is there a easy way to get to this connector? Or where can I find it?

Here in Sweden you need to have your lights on all the time, so like my car the lights are wired to always be on. Might explain the problem...

As Knobby and Punto says dry joints in the UK their are companies that will re solder them if you are not up to doing it you’re self you may have some local to you
A mate of mine who’s a radio ham was going to do mine if you know one local to you it may be worth a try my mate was always making up his own radios

yeah my mk6 does this, and then i tap it and it comes back on. i tell the MOT man who know's his transit in case it happens during the test. He shrugs knowingly says lots do that !

can someone describe what needs to be done and can it be done in situ ?

If not, is removing the clock straightforward ?

I took my instrument cluster out thinking I'd need to resolder it, but all the solder still looked solid - Gave it a clean with electrical contact cleaner including all the connectors and now it stays on 90% of the time. Worth a shot if you're not up to soldering, but you do have to be very careful dismantling it and setting the gauges back in the right spots.
