My heater is crap

Postby kev100 » Mon Dec 02, 2019 7:04 pm

So my heater is crap, I am nearly at work before it starts to get warm, can be as much as 15 mins, When I first had the van 6 years ago I am sure it got warm quickly.

Changed the thermostat on the head, but no change.

I did read somewhere there is a second thermostat, is this correct, and could this be the problem ... if not any other idea's ?

Just to mention the temperature guage takes ages to move too, and only starts to move at the same time the heating starts to work, once up to temperature the heater is fine.

Cheers
Kev

FWD or RWD?
Mk6 or mk7?
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Could be you've got a poorly waterpump, the drive splines on the fwd waterpump wear and fail.

Or maybe the air flap that controls the airflow through the heater matrix is not moving properly and letting too much cold air around the matrix instead of through it.

Thanks, waterpump was replaced 2 years ago ... onece engine gets hot eventually, the heater works fine .. it just takes forever when its cold ...

Will check the flap, but I dont think its this because as mentioned the temperature guage takes agaes to move, its only when it starts moving that the heater starts working .. do you know anything about this second thermostat and if that might be the cause ?

Mk4 had a second thermostat on the watter feed to the oil cooler so that the engine warmed up before the cooler started working.

As far as I know there is no equivalent on the mk7.

by the sounds of it there is nothing wrong with the heater the heater will only put out the same amount of heat as the engine has what you mean is the engine isnt getting up to temp quick enoth

Ok, Changed the oil cooler thermostat and although it does seem a little better, still taking ages for the temp guage to move and the heater to start blowing hot .. as I mentioned before, after maybe 10 - 15 mins of driving, the temp guage gets up to temperature, and the heater starts blowing hot air ...

Any other suggestions please ?

I've ordered one of each- even though there is no problem with the heater!
