Mk6 2.4 smoking when revved up....HELP

Postby Edturns » Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:35 am

Hi guys and thank you for accepting my request to join.

I have a 2004 2.4 diesel engine which I am told is referred to as the banana engine. (no idea why)
The problem I've got iS when its revved up even to 2000rpm clouds of white smoke develop out of the exhaust,
AA informed me it was head gasket or injectors,
injectors have been replaced with no difference whatsoever and I've had the head gasket tested with the blue liquid, the engine isn't even losing water or going passed the quarter stage on the temperature gauge.
I have also replaced the fuel from the tank and the fuel filter, no change whatsoever,
I am just in the process of changing the fuel filter housing in the hope its that sucking in air.

Any advise would be kindly appreciated

Um, no it isn't, Banana engine was one variant (76ps) of the older Di engine fitted in the Mk5.
Yours is the later Duratorq engine

You'll need to supply more information, as in which power variant engine do you have fitted :?: (It may be written on the doors just under the windows)

Aha :!: You said it was a Mk6  :P

LDV Convoy was fitted with either a 75ps or 90ps 2.4 TDDi Duratorq and there was no info on the doors!
The 90ps was the same engine but intercooled, and had a cutout above the front bumper for the intercooler air flow

Head gasket failure is almost unheard of on these engines, fuel filter air ingress is a possibility. If it's actually losing water, the intercooler could be suspect.

Well, I have just replaced the fuel filter and the housing which made no difference whatsoever.
As soon as you get it started it ticks over great allday long but as soon as you rev it, out beltches the white smoke.

Run the engine with the oil cap off and see if it is puffing smoke out the filler hole

will do tomorrow as I have had enough of this van for today, but what would it confirm if it does smoke from the oil filler cap?

Morning Guys,

Well, still no success, I have changed the filter housing and filter, after filling the filter with diesel and spending what seemed like forever bleeding the fuel to the injectors and same story it eventually ran on tickover, but what I did notice is the fuel filter isn't filling up, after the engine cut out I took the filter off again and it was more or less empty. the drain screw is fully tightened. any advise please?

She's obviously still drawing in air on the upstream side of the filter, since the filter head is new, it can only be the leak-back lines or the line from the tank.
