Mk7 SWB Low Roof/Tourneo height & Car park Barriers

Postby Dionysius » Wed Apr 01, 2020 7:31 pm

Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase abase vehicle for an overnight van for using for cycling events. Something Ican sleepin, possibly cook something simple, and store the (very expensive) bike inside.

One feature that would be really useful would be the ability to go under a standard car park barrier, most of which are 2.0m

My ideal vehicle would be a SWB low roof Custom, as I believe theses will just about go under (and could be maybe mildly lowered to do so with a bigger safety margin ) but given the current situation I'm not sure my budgets going to stretch quite that far.

More within my budget would be a SWB /LowRoof Mk7, (a 260 or 280 would be fine ) and possibly a Tourneo bus (these already have the windows, lining, and rear wiper and rear heated screen. I assume FWD is a better option?

Ive been trying to research the height of these vehicles, but am coming up with various figures for a Mk7 SWB LRoof van some quoting them to just be below 2.0m and some just above. And the Tourneo I cant seem to find figures for at all.

Ive also noticed some Tourneos have small roofbars on top- can these be taken off or will it leave holes in the roof which go through to inside (or is it an external fitting?) and could these be difficult to seal and prone to leak.

(a) Can anyone tell me what the height is of the SWB Low Roof (does it vary by Spec ??) and the Tourneo (is this different to a SWB LR Van ? I assume its same bodyshell)
(b) is it possible to lower the suspension on a Mk7 to get it to pass under a 2.0m Car-park without risking scraping the roof ?
(c) if it is possible to lower it, can it be done without reducing ground clearance to dangerous levels and not making the van look "pimped"

Hope theres someone here whos knowledgeable enough to answer these questions !

Or does anyone have these vehicles and regulalrly go 2.0m under car-park barriers ?1

Cheers

Dionysius.

I've linked to this guys thread because it details quite well how he lowered his MK7.

I don't have specific figures, but a 260 FWD would be the lowest, a 280 would sit a bit higher due to stiffer springs. A 260 has smaller wheels and softer suspension than a 330 (for example)

Plus if you want to sleep and cook in it, you need a Medium Roof really. Unless you will sit down and cook or you're a smaller person...

You'll have no chance of a medium roof getting under any height barrier though :?

Ah yes I forgot about that. I suppose a low roof will be okay with the right adaptations for cooking. Or if you're just having one of those hob set ups that you can bring out of the van with some kind of extension... instead of a built in version...

You could always fit a pop top , most 260 and 280 will probably be same height as when fittng replacement springs they're nearly all listed as same springs, both have 15in wheels lowered springs can be bought but clearance probs and the pimped look is a given, before i fitted heavier springs my 280 lwb medium roof would go under 2.2m so would imagine low roof
would go under 2m ..... ask LOOT he's got mwb low roof and probably a tape measure in his back pocket

I've a T260 low roof and had a T280 low roof before it. Both would go under the same car park barriers.

BUT!

When is 2m not 2m? Because most places, even multi-storeys, they would go in but I've scraped the roof on a few that are supposed to be 2m....

Plus, you can't reverse under one of those barriers (if you ever needed to) because the aerial would snag.
Drink moderately, eat healthily, exercise regularly, die anyway.
