Mk6 RWD ball joints

Postby FFMan » Thu May 07, 2020 4:17 pm

Hi

whilst we're all in lockdown getting a few jobs done. Had an mot warning on ball joints last time so bought a pair along with steering rod ends to complete the job.

The Haynes manual says to remove the hub, inc the 425 foot/pound hub nut and stub axle (i'm tooled up but not looking forward to that), but some videos on line either do it on the van, or without removing the stub axle.

Any tips ?

Hi, are you talking about the steering track rods and ball ends ?. if so theres no need to touch the hub, apart from undoing the nut. If your doing the hub lower ball joints im sure ive seen these done with the hub left on.

No need to remove the hub, remove the circlip from the top of the ball joint, use a hammer to knock the ball joint out of the hub and remove from the wishbone. Simples

Refitting the new one, bolt the new ball joint into the wishbone, line the joint up with the hub and using a trolley Jack, Jack it up to press the ball joint into the hub.

Yes it can all be done on the van, remove the wheel obviously and remove the track rod end from the hub thus gives move room to get at the ball joint.

..... A hammer may be required to get the tapers out the arms though. Just smack the outside edge of where the taper is directly opposite the arms and they'll usually just pop out.
Do the TRE's first so you can spin the strut to get a better angle at things.
Take out split pin and remove dummy hub shaft nut before removing wheel.

Nah..
Just clean the bore well, light bit of oil lube, drop it in the wishbone, line it up and jack it back.up into position. Maybe a light tap to keep it straight at the start but no need smash it
