i always try a bit of brake cleaner down their throat if they dont run then its astrip down job

but i also check cam an crank sync either says yes or no

I have crank/cam sync under crank and engine rpm
I will update after I pull the front engine cover off

As v8dave said....inlet cam could be correct giving good cam/crank synch.. but the exhaust cam could be out. Cam sensor is only on the inlet cam.....I guess we'll soon find out.!!

Update guys!
Took the front off last night and all the timing is correct
I spoke to the guy I bought that car from and he hasn’t removed any gears so that should all be okay

My next thing is another mechanic friend of mine thinks it sounds like the valves are stuck on 1 or 2 of the cylinders
He wants me to pull off the rocker cover and turn each cylinder so the valves are shut and spray compressed air into the cylinder and see if the piston goes down and the valves open to let the air out

Would I diesel not start with stuck valves??

Stuck valves can stop an engine starting, it depends on how many and where.

I did say take the front and top covers off....

You said in your first post the timing chain has been replaced.
You need to know why.
You need to check that the cam sprockets are correctly timed to the cams.
You need to know if any rocker arms are damaged.
You need to know that the cam carrier has not been damaged, this can happen when timing chains jump or break.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Took the rocker cover off and found cylinder 4 roller rocker has snapped and was just dancing around the head
Then took the head off completely
So the head is damaged, I think the cheaper option is a second hand engine and just replace it

You might be better getting a rebuilt unit.

Sorry, it has been a long time since I built an engine for anything and I'm out of touch with potential suppliers.

All good
I found a brand new complete head assembly
Would it be easier just to buy that??

The mechanic thinks he can machine away the burrs in the head from the rocker bouncing around in there
But the cam carrier is broken, can you get another from different engine or does it have to be from the same head?

Thanks

Ideally from the same head as they are "line bored" as a matched unit.
