Coil light flashing when tank is below half

Postby Tipp2.8camper » Thu Sep 03, 2020 10:23 pm

I have a mk6 2.4 rwd with a camper built on top.
The issue I have is the glow plug / coil light flashes when the tank is below half full. It seems to go into a kinda limp mode (down on power). When I fill back up the light goes out and the issue stops.
Wondering what people think? I did get the ecu scanned and the only a codes where for the egr and a the vacuum solenoid. They are sorted previously. No code showing for this fault.
Wondering is it on the low pressure side of the fuel system.

Any ideas to help trouble shoot would be great.

I had similar 4 years ago in France, my camper used to go limp mode when below 1/2 tank. I could get out of it by restarting a few times.
Travelled around France for a month with it. Eventually got worse so ended up changing the pump. Never did workout the 1/2 tank link ? Nor did I have a flashing coil. That’s a fuel management indicator

Is it a TDCi..?? The pump may be struggling to draw the fuel up when the tank is under half....pump is possibly duff.

Glow plug light flashing means there's fault codes stored...you need to get the codes read.

Think problem is in the tank, gauze on fuel pick up maybe choked low down, not 100% sure but the pick up on sum vehicles are on a spring loaded slide that can jam or break if bottom of tank takes a heavy knock, or if the gauze is choked it can draw a certain amount of fuel through the top of sliding part,
If only happening at low fuel I'd checking in the tank first
If any work was done just prior to this happening fuel side I'd make sure the fuel return pipe and main feed haven't been swapped by mistake as the fuel tank return pipe in side tank stops about half way

Thanks for the input.
No codes came up for the fuel system only the egr and vacuum solenoid

Issue resolved.

So here’s what happened.
I believed the issue was with the low pressure side of the fuel system as the check engine light would go off and the limp home mode would stop when I filled the tank up. So I drained the tank just incase there was any issues and water in it.
Nothing major seen so I replaced the fuel filter while I was at it. No joy the issue was still there.
Back to square one.

I decided to take it to a ecu and electrical guy that I got a recommendation for. My van couldn’t be read with the standard OBD2 reader so needed a software setup. He advised that I replace the egr vacuum solenoid regulator.
Guess what all sorted no more limp home mode and flashing light.

All in time for the Irish annual test, big green pass.
That’s guys for your inputs

Mk6's are not OBD-ll compliant...so none of the newer readers will work.
