Mk6 uneven wear osf inner tyre vibration and droning

Postby MissLindyLoo » Sat Sep 19, 2020 3:28 pm

Hi all,
I have a 2005 mk6 t430 2.4 tdi, it's recently developed a bad vibration and droning sound between 50 - 70mph and the inside of the osf tyre has no tread left on it. When driving down the motorway if I slightly turn the steering wheel to the left the droning and vibration goes away.

It's just had an MOT (maybe 1000 miles ago) and there was no mention of the west with the tyre or issues with the bearing so it seems new. Could the tyre wear that bad that fast?

Kwikfit wouldn't balance the tyres because of the wearing on the right tyre and they don't think that's the issue. I've seen some other posts with the same wearing issue but no one mentions it along with vibration/droning and the slight steering fix. Would this just be a case of bad alignment? I'm no mechanic and don't want to end up chasing the wrong fix!

Thanks !!

Whatever you need to do to sort it out, and someone will be along with some advice soon, please don't entrust kwikfit with anything other than possibly putting some air in the tyres  :P

Sound like your wheel alignment is out, go to any decent tyre fitters (not quick sh*t) and ask for the tracking to be done.

Where abouts are you as someone maybe able to advise on a good place to go.

"Droning" and tyre wear does point to a bad wheel bearing. I had the same issue, n/s front bearing went south and caused noise and toe-out and wear to the inner half of the tyre...new bearing and wheel alignment fixed it.

how can you tell if the wheel bearings are gone ? is it possible to jack the front off the ground and put a lever under the tyre like I have seen done on cars

Mine was making noise, on the other hand, having to cut it with the grinder even with the press it did not come out.
My tires also wear a little more on the inside.

Yep, jack it up and rotate wheel, if it rumbles or has movement up/down or side to side, you can be pretty sure the bearing is shot.

Just be aware they may not rumble unless loaded.
