Hard start

Postby bros400pgm » Sun Sep 20, 2020 10:55 am

Hello everyone
New to the forum, I just bought a used ford transit 2007 eu model.
I have some questions but what is really annoying me is that when I turn the key on and immediately fire the starter, engine comes on. But when I leave a few seconds the key ignition to ON and the turn to start, it really straggles but eventually fires up.
Is this thing common or is there a problem with something;

Does sound like starter battery is weak
If you have started it and then switched it off seconds later it hasn't had any chance of recharge - although it should do it if good battery

Engine is 2.2 turbo, 5 speed.
Both batteries are brand-new, think are 70amps .

Could it be the ignition switch?

Really don't know. At first I thought it was the glow plugs.

They don't really need the glow plugs to start...although it does help. Ignition switch is cheap and easy to do...just to rule it out.

Can someone tell me what is the correct procedure to start the engine? Do I have to wait for the preheating icon to disappear?

In theory, yes....but they don't necessarily need the glow plugs to run. There's many Transits running around that haven't had glow plugs working for years.

Problem solved. Managed to get the car to an electrician and he immediately discovered bad earths. Cleaned them and it starts as it supposed.
Thanks everyone for posting.
